Minimum Qualifications

All applicants must meet the education and/or experience requirements as stated on this exam bulletin to be accepted to the examination.

Unless otherwise stated in the Minimum Qualifications, qualifying experience may be combined on a proportionate basis if the requirements stated below include more than one pattern and are distinguished as "Either" 1, "or" 2, "or" 3, etc. For example, applicants possessing qualifying experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 1 and additional experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 2 may be accepted to an examination as meeting 100% of the overall experience requirement.

Experience: One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Junior Industrial Hygienist.

Or 2

Experience: Two years of professional or technical experience in identifying, evaluating, and controlling health hazards in work places, and developing, evaluating, and implementing occupational health standards. This experience shall include at least one year in a position comparable in level, responsibility, and duties to that of a Junior Industrial Hygienist in the California state service. (A Master's Degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, or a closely related curriculum may be substituted for one year of the required general experience.) and


Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in industrial hygiene, environmental health, engineering, chemistry, biology, physics, medicine, public health, or in a field directly related to occupational health and safety. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.) A Master's Degree in Industrial Hygiene or Occupational Health, acquired in a two-year master's degree program including planned work experiences, may be substituted for the two years of required general experience.

Position Description

00103855 - ASSISTANT INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST

This is the first working professional level. Under direction, performs industrial hygiene work of average difficulty; makes preliminary surveys and inspections of occupational environments; conducts studies of potential health hazards of specific substances or in specific industries or processes; prepares reports of findings and makes recommendations for the elimination or control of hazardous conditions; assists in the design, construction, and use of special field apparatus; collects statistics and information from industrial establishments; gives information on the control of industrial health hazards; interprets standards; dictates correspondence and prepares reports; and does other related work.

Examination Information

This examination consists of the following components:

  • Online Exam : A passing score must be achieved and is weighted 100% of the final score.

A final score of 70% must be attained to be placed on the eligible list.

In addition to evaluating the applicant's relative knowledge, skill and ability as demonstrated by quality and breadth of education/experience, emphasis in each test component will be on measuring competitively, relative to job demands, each applicant's:

Knowledge of:

  1. Basic principles of industrial hygiene, environmental health, and State and Federal laws, rules, and regulations on the health of industrial workers
  2. Basic concepts of apparatus used to monitor and/or collect samples of substances for analysis
  3. Public health and industrial hygiene principles and practices
  4. One or more phases of biological, chemical, engineering, or toxicological factors, effects, and control measures
  5. Apparatus used to monitor and/or collect samples for analysis
  6. Methods, techniques, and practices used in determining and eliminating health hazards in industry
Ability to:
  1. Analyze situations accurately, derive recommendations, and take effective action
  2. Establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the course of the work
  3. Communicate effectively
  4. Prepare clear and concise reports
  5. Collect and evaluate plant findings and make recommendations for the elimination or control of hazardous conditions
  6. Function as a specialist in one or more phases of biological, chemical, engineering, or toxicological factor, and effects and control measures
  7. Interpret and apply industrial hygiene standards

Eligible List Information

A Servicewide Open eligible list for the ASSISTANT INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST Classification will be established for:

  • State of California

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 12 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Resulting Eligibility List(s) will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of California.

Veterans' Preference will be granted for this examination. Possession of specific training is not required to be successful in this examination; however, such achievements may substitute for desirable levels of experience. All components of this examination have been carefully validated by tying them directly to job  requirements and documenting their relevance to the position.

Describe your work experience relevant to performing this task, both paid and volunteer.
  1. Conducting industrial hygiene research using available resources (e.g., internet, literature, scientific/trade literature, inspection data, news reports) to collect information required to complete assigned job tasks.
  2. Reviewing the data obtained from laboratory or instruments to assist in determining whether employee exposure exceeds a health and/or safety standard.
  3. Conducting basic research on processes, equipment, chemicals and/or other hazards associated with various industries or workplaces for purposes of evaluating potential hazards.
  4. Reviewing technical and/or operating manuals to ensure employers follow applicable regulatory requirements and/or manufacturers’ recommended maintenance, safety and operations procedures (e.g., respirators, ventilation systems, exposure monitoring equipment, lockout/tagout procedures).
  5. Conducting inspections of employers’ worksites to determine compliance with applicable safety and health regulations.
  6. Interviewing employers, employees, and/or others in order to gather information and evidence on working conditions, accidents, and/or other health and safety issues.
  7. Calibrating, maintaining, and using industrial hygiene direct reading and/or sampling equipment to ensure functionality, precision and accuracy in sampling data.
  8. Maintaining the confidentiality of information and documentation as required by law (e.g., complainants, trade secrets, medical information, personnel information).
  9. Performing calculations and analyses of raw data obtained through industrial hygiene monitoring for purposes of determining employee exposure to hazardous substances.
  10. Gathering and documenting evidence and/or conditions during an inspection, investigation, or on-site consultation to determine compliance with applicable safety and health regulations.

Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. Your performance in the examination described in this bulletin will be rated against a predetermined job-related rating, and all applicants who pass will be ranked according to their scores.

State of California reserves the right to revise the examination plan to better meet the needs of the service, if the circumstances under which this examination was planned change. Such revision will be in accordance with civil service laws and rules and all applicants will be notified.

General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.

Accepted applicants must provide proof of identification at each in-person test session. Acceptable identification consists of a photo identification card or two forms of signed identification.
