Minimum Qualifications

All applicants must meet the education and/or experience requirements as stated on this exam bulletin to be accepted to the examination.

Unless otherwise stated in the Minimum Qualifications, qualifying experience may be combined on a proportionate basis if the requirements stated below include more than one pattern and are distinguished as "Either" 1, "or" 2, "or" 3, etc. For example, applicants possessing qualifying experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 1 and additional experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 2 may be accepted to an examination as meeting 100% of the overall experience requirement.

Either 1
Six months of experience in California state service performing duties of a class with a level of responsibility equivalent to a Custodian I; or


2
One year of professional cleaning experience. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent can be substituted for six months of the required experience.

Position Description

00102003 - CUSTODIAN II

Under direction, incumbents work with, lead and instruct Custodians, inmates, youth offenders, or institutional residents engaged in keeping an office, building, area, correctional facility, residential facility, or medical facility clean and orderly; lead the work of a small work crew; assist with the evaluation of the performance of employees; request, receive, inspect, store, and inventory supplies; receive complaints from building occupants and make or recommend necessary adjustments; keep records and prepare reports; and assist Custodian Supervisors in training lower-level staff.

A limited number of positions will be allocated to this level for incumbents working in a military base setting who perform custodial services, as well as, store, safeguard, and keep records of State property; maintain buildings and grounds; make simple repairs required in the upkeep of buildings such as replacing windows, light switches and electrical outlets, painting, and repairing faulty plumbing; use high ladders and scaffolding as necessary; and use hand and power tools.

Willing to work evenings, weekends, and overtime.

All employees must have general qualifications as described by California Code of Regulations, title 2, section 172.

Examination Information

This examination consists of the following components:

  • Online Exam : A passing score must be achieved and is weighted 100% of the final score.

A final score of 70% must be attained to be placed on the eligible list.

In addition to evaluating the applicant's relative knowledge, skill and ability as demonstrated by quality and breadth of education/experience, emphasis in each test component will be on measuring competitively, relative to job demands, each applicant's:

Knowledge of:

  1.  Materials, chemicals, disinfectants, equipment, and methods used in professional cleaning work.
  2.  Sanitation and safety measures in the operating, cleaning and care of equipment and work areas.
  3.  Safety practices.
  4.  Training techniques.
  5.  Procurement documents for cleaning supplies.
  6.  Personal computer hardware and/or software products.
Ability to:
  1.  Safely use and care for equipment and supplies.
  2.  Safely use manual and/or electric cleaning equipment.
  3.  Keep accurate inventories.
  4.  Follow directions.
  5.  Learn and perform routine custodial tasks.
  6.  Work courteously and cooperatively with others. 
  7.  Safely lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  8.  Identify and resolve complex issues as it relates to custodial functions.
  9.  Utilize acceptable work habits and meet established standards.
  10.  Communicate effectively.
  11.  Promote positive, collaborative, and professional working relationships.
  12.  Facilitate meetings to provide information and determine action needed.
  13.  Plan, organize and/or manage multiple tasks.
  14.  Work independently or as a team member.
Ability to (in departments with inmates or mental health patients): 
  1.  Maintain order and supervise the conduct of persons committed.
  2.  Prevent escapes and injury of these persons, to themselves, to others, and to property.
  3.  Maintain security of work areas and work materials.
Ability to (while working in a military base setting):
  1.  Make various minor building repairs.
  2.  Work from ladders, scaffolds, and in high places.
  3.  Write clear and concise reports.
  4.  Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
  5.  Keep records of State property.

Eligible List Information

A Servicewide Open eligible list for the CUSTODIAN II Classification will be established for:

  • State of California

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 12 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Resulting Eligibility List(s) will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of California.

Veterans' Preference will be granted for this examination. Veterans' Preference is an assistance program for veterans, veteran widows and widowers, and spouses of 100% disabled veterans who seek employment with the state. Veterans' Preference is also extended to currently serving military members nearing their retirement or separation date.

You are not eligible for Veteran's Preference if you are:

  • A veteran who has been dishonorably discharged or released.
  • A veteran, widow or widower of a veteran, or spouse of a 100 percent disabled veteran who currently has permanent civil service status. (Permanent civil service status is the status of an employee who is lawfully retained in his/her position after completion of the applicable probationary period. This does not include limited term).

PLEASE NOTE: This examination is designed to gain an overall assessment of your experience as it directly relates to the duties and the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position. All components of this examination have been carefully validated by tying them directly to job requirements and documenting their relevance to the position.


Section 1: Tasks

  1. Cleaning up bodily fluids/blood spill from floors or other surfaces using material clean-up kit (e.g., gloves, shoe covers, goggles, mask, Personal Protective Equipment) following correct procedures to ensure personal and tenant safety and maintain appearance.
  2. Disinfecting restroom fixtures, doorknobs, showers, countertops, entry doors, urinals, wash basins, toilet bowls, wall tiles, walls, and/or partitions using the correct cleaning solutions and equipment to provide a healthy environment.
  3. Sanitizing kitchen/breakroom countertops and/or sinks using the correct cleaning solutions and equipment.
  4. Cleaning hard surface floors in assigned work areas (e.g., restrooms, general office areas, hallways) using the correct cleaning solutions and equipment to disinfect and eliminate safety hazards.
  5. Removing trash by emptying receptacles, changing liners, and/or disinfecting in assigned work area as needed.  
  6. Removing biohazard waste following established safety procedures to maintain appearance and ensure personal and tenant safety.
  7. Verbally notifying supervisor about safety-related problems (e.g., syringe needles in trash, dangerous situations, bodily fluid/blood spills) to ensure problem is promptly resolved.
  8. Explaining procedures for preparing and using chemicals to others to ensure chemicals are properly prepared and used.
  9. Providing verbal instructions to new employees to explain work procedures or develop knowledge or skills.
  10. Reading Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to understand information about cleaning solutions and chemicals encountered on the job to ensure they are properly prepared, stored, and used in safe manner.
  11. Reading and understanding procedures regarding safety (e.g., equipment safety, hazard communication, personal protective equipment, use of bodily fluid/blood spill cleanup and disposal) to ensure performance of safe work practices.
  12. Making rounds of assigned work area to conduct a visual inspection and report any safety hazards and needed repairs to ensure a safe environment.
  13. Conducting inventory of equipment, supplies, and/or materials in order to maintain inventory.
  14. Preparing accident reports when necessary including all relevant details to ensure proper documentation of incidents.

If you meet the requirements stated on this examination bulletin, you may take this examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. Your performance in the examination described in this bulletin will be rated against a predetermined job-related rating, and all applicants who pass will be ranked according to their scores.

State of California reserves the right to revise the examination plan to better meet the needs of the service, if the circumstances under which this examination was planned change. Such revision will be in accordance with civil service laws and rules and all applicants will be notified.

General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.

Accepted applicants must provide proof of identification at each in-person test session. Acceptable identification consists of a photo identification card or two forms of signed identification.
