Unless otherwise stated in the Minimum Qualifications, qualifying experience may be combined on a proportionate basis if the requirements stated below include more than one pattern and are distinguished as "Either" 1, "or" 2, "or" 3, etc. For example, applicants possessing qualifying experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 1 and additional experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 2 may be accepted to an examination as meeting 100% of the overall experience requirement.

This examination consists of the following components:

A final score of 70% must be attained to be placed on the eligible list.

In addition to evaluating the applicant's relative knowledge, skill and ability as demonstrated by quality and breadth of education/experience, emphasis in each test component will be on measuring competitively, relative to job demands, each applicant's:

Knowledge of:

1. General principles of toxicology, with emphasis in environmental and occupational health concerns
2. Laboratory and testing procedures for toxicological investigations
3. Principles and procedures of risk assessment
4. Provisions of laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the use, processing and handling of toxic substances
5. Principles of toxicology and public health applicable to the recognition, identification and quantification of relative hazards from exposure to chemicals in the environment
6. One or more specialized areas in toxicology or a closely related field
7. Principles and techniques of effective supervision and program budget management
8. The department's Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives

Ability to:

1. Evaluate research studies in the fields of toxicology and pharmacology for application to issues of public health
2. Work cooperatively with outside agencies and departmental staff
3. Interpret and apply environmental and public health standards

A Servicewide Open eligible list for the SENIOR TOXICOLOGIST Classification will be established for:

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 24 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Veterans' Preference will be granted for this examination. Veterans' Preference is an assistance program for veterans, veteran widows and widowers, and spouses of 100% disabled veterans who seek employment with the state. Veterans' Preference is also extended to currently serving military members nearing their retirement or separation date.

You are not eligible for Veteran's Preference if you are:

PLEASE NOTE:  This examination is designed to gain an overall assessment of your education, training, and experience as it directly relates to the duties and the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position.  Possession of specific education is not required to be successful in this examination; however, such achievements may substitute for desirable levels of experience.  All components of this examination have been carefully validated by tying them directly to job requirements and documenting their relevance to the position.

Tasks:

1. Evaluating studies in the fields of pharmacology, toxicology, and/or exposure assessment related to issues of public health or environmental impacts.
2. Reviewing and editing scientific and/or technical documents for accuracy, completeness, format, grammar, and terminology.
3. Providing toxicological expertise in evaluating chemical exposures and subsequent risks and hazards to living organisms; and serving as the subject matter expert for complex evaluations.
4. Identifying and solving problems and issues that arise with regard to projects in collaboration with staff members and/or other scientists.
5. Creating timelines with milestones for projects and providing management briefings on the completion of those milestones.
6. Evaluating aspects of toxicology, chemical exposure, modeling, or risk assessment by analyzing data provided in reports or other relevant data sources.
7. Interpreting and analyzing data from scientific literature or technical documents to draw sound conclusions and explicate key points relevant to projects or assignments.
8. Conducting or directing toxicological and/or exposure studies, or risk assessment (which can include hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment and risk characterization) of chemicals or environmental contaminants.
9. Writing technical or scientific reports, project summaries, or other documents responding to public comments or requests for information.
10. Preparing presentations, fact sheets, and/or briefing materials based on technical or scientific work products for a variety of audiences including subject matter experts, scientists, decision-makers, and the general public.
11. Facilitating meetings or group discussions, considering all opinions, and fostering consensus.
12. Communicating with a variety of audiences (e.g., local, county, state, federal agencies, general public, stakeholders and scientific audiences) regarding technical projects, program status, or questions regarding risk assessments or other toxicological and exposure issues.
13. Interpreting and evaluating experimental study methods, results, and conclusions in terms of exposure, toxicological properties, and hazards.
14. Interpreting quantitative and statistical data to extract key information and make valid inferences.
15. Identifying inaccuracies, inconsistencies, and deficiencies in scientific methods, data analysis, or conclusions in toxicological and other scientific and/or technical reports.

General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.

Accepted applicants must provide proof of identification at each in-person test session. Acceptable identification consists of a photo identification card or two forms of signed identification.
