Unless otherwise stated in the Minimum Qualifications, qualifying experience may be combined on a proportionate basis if the requirements stated below include more than one pattern and are distinguished as "Either" 1, "or" 2, "or" 3, etc. For example, applicants possessing qualifying experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 1 and additional experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 2 may be accepted to an examination as meeting 100% of the overall experience requirement.

In addition to evaluating the applicant's relative knowledge, skill and ability as demonstrated by quality and breadth of education/experience, emphasis in each test component will be on measuring competitively, relative to job demands, each applicant's:

A Departmental Open eligible list for the ASSISTANT SAFETY ENGINEER Classification will be established for:

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 24 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Veterans' Preference will be granted for this examination. 2. Applying interviewing techniques in order to draw out information concerning the facts of an incident (e.g., catastrophes, fatalities, injuries, illnesses).
3. Reasoning logically in a variety of situations (e.g., interpreting regulations, reaching conclusions on inspections and on-site consultations, gathering information) to conduct accident investigation, safety inspections and or safety consultations.
4. Independently writing technical documents (e.g., investigative reports, project summaries) in order to communicate findings of safety investigations, inspections, or consultations.
5. Understanding safety related formal and informal training to improve and develop professional performance standards.
6. Investigating situations of a sensitive nature (e.g., fatalities, serious injuries, illnesses, slaughterhouses, prisons) to assist with determining the cause(s) of an accident.
7. Effectively analyzing and responding to a variety of unique or unexpected situations (e.g. issues arising in the course of collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses or injured persons, monitoring measurements) to complete accident investigations and/or safety inspections.
8. Maintaining and documenting detailed records to track deadlines and complete accident investigations and/or inspections before the statute of limitation expires or suspense date.
9. Understanding written documents of varying complexity (e.g., departmental policy manuals and guides, instructional guides, written correspondence, State and Federal regulations, specifications and technical reports) in order to conduct accident investigations, inspections, complaints, and/or consultations.
10. Evaluating a situation in the course of a safety inspection to determine if it is dangerous, hazardous and/or requires immediate action.
11. Extracting relevant facts and information from written documents to perform effective project planning, solve problems or summarize information to conduct accident investigations and/or safety inspections.
12. Independently writing non-technical documents such as letters, memos, or other correspondence in order to communicate safety related information with other departmental staff, other agencies, or the general public.
13. Handling sensitive safety related matters in a tactful and professional manner to complete assignments (e.g., inspections, working with coworkers, working with supervisors, and dealing with the public).
14. Applying knowledge of mathematical techniques (e.g. algebra, basic arithmetic calculations) to analyze numerical data for safety inspections and investigations.
15. Applying knowledge of basic science (e.g., chemistry industrial hygiene, physics, mathematics, biology) and basic engineer (e.g., construction processes, electrical ergonomics) to assist in evaluating a hazard.
16. Working cooperatively and productively as a member of a team to achieve a common goal (e.g., conducting coordinated safety inspections, providing assistance with accident investigations).
17. Seeking proper assistance in situations where available information, resources, or capabilities are insufficient in order to complete safety inspections or consultations, conduct accident investigations, and/or address safety related complaints.
18. Applying decision-making techniques and knowledge of processes in order to make appropriate judgment calls in the course of conducting accident investigations, safety inspections, and/or safety consultations.
19. Determining when and where to use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure personal safety when conducting inspections and/or accident investigations.

General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.

Accepted applicants must provide proof of identification at each in-person test session. Acceptable identification consists of a photo identification card or two forms of signed identification.
