Minimum Qualifications

All applicants must meet the education and/or experience requirements as stated on this exam bulletin to be accepted to the examination.

Unless otherwise stated in the Minimum Qualifications, qualifying experience may be combined on a proportionate basis if the requirements stated below include more than one pattern and are distinguished as "Either" 1, "or" 2, "or" 3, etc. For example, applicants possessing qualifying experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 1 and additional experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 2 may be accepted to an examination as meeting 100% of the overall experience requirement.

One year of experience in the California state service performing construction duties at a level of responsibility equivalent to the class of Construction Supervisor I (CF).

Or 2

Experience: Broad and extensive (more than five years) experience as a general contractor or superintendent in full-time direction of Trade Craft Supervisors involved in construction, renovation, or large scale repair of major buildings such as schools or hospitals. [Experience in California state service applied toward this requirement must include at least one year performing construction duties at a level of responsibility equivalent to the class of Construction Supervisor I (CF).] and

Education: Completion of the equivalent of 60 semester units of college courses with major work in architecture, engineering, or a related field. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

Position Description

00104108 - CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISOR II (CORRECTIONAL FACILITY)

This is the second line supervisory level for the series. Under general supervision incumbents are responsible for administrative project supervision in a geographical area of multiple facilities. Typical tasks include administrative supervision of construction projects in a geographical area; review of estimates for geographical area; inspection of work in progress for adherence to standards, codes and time schedules; participation in the recruitment, hiring, training and supervision of staff, including inmates or wards and casual trades persons; coordination with union labor representatives and with facility vocational education.

Special Personal Characteristics

Willingness to travel; leadership; tact; patience; understanding of the problems of adult or youthful offenders in custody; and demonstrated interest in training programs for adult or youthful offenders.

Eligible List Information

A Departmental Open eligible list for the CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISOR II (CORRECTIONAL FACILITY) Classification will be established for:

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 12 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Resulting Eligibility List(s) will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of California.

Construction Supervisor II (Correctional Facility) Training and Experience Examination Preview

Respond to each of the following statements by indicating how the statement applies to you. You are required to respond to every statement by making one option for each of the 2 scales provided. In responding to each statement, you may refer to your FORMAL EDUCATION, FORMAL TRAINING COURSES, and/or WORK EXPERIENCE whether paid or not paid.

Tasks:
  1. Provide leadership and guidance to construction crews to produce a quality product within budget and schedule.
  2. Prioritize multiple construction projects at different locations to effectively complete projects on time and within budget.
  3. Supervise assigned staff in regional safety programs (i.e. Injury Illness Prevention Program.)
  4. Supervise the work activities (i.e., construction and alterations/repairs of large scale building structures) of staff and construction workforce at multiple facilities.
  5. Inspect work in progress to provide status reports to management regarding project schedules and deadlines.
  6. Maintain safety and security of assigned work areas through inspections and searches for contraband (e.g. weapons or illegal drugs, etc.) and tool/key control.
  7. Perform supervisory duties in the work place with regard to department-wide mandates concerning Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and other personnel practices.
  8. Utilize the Injury Illness Prevention Program to prevent injury on construction sites.
  9. Apply regulations, departmental policies and procedures, etc., to construction processes.
  10. Assist in the development of project construction schedules to meet priority objectives (i.e., project urgency and cost).
  11. Plan the work of assigned staff with regional responsibilities for an extensive geographical area in multiple facilities.
  12. Read, understand, and interpret construction plans and specifications.
  13. Approve procurement documents for necessary materials, tools, and equipment to complete an assigned project.
  14. Perform planning of construction activities to ensure the goals and objectives of the Department are achieved.
  15. Review data and submittals (e.g., shop drawings and manufactures cut sheets, etc.)
  16. Coordinate with project stakeholders, facilities and union labor representatives.
  17. Review cost estimates (e.g. materials, labor, equipment, contracts, etc.) to support construction project funding requests.
  18. Review procurement documents for necessary materials, tools, and equipment.
  19. Communicate professionally and effectively with staff to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  20. Identify the testing and inspection requirements of projects to ensure finished construction complies with California Code of Regulations (CCR) and applicable building access.

Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. Your performance in the examination described in this bulletin will be rated against a predetermined job-related rating, and all applicants who pass will be ranked according to their scores.

Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation reserves the right to revise the examination plan to better meet the needs of the service, if the circumstances under which this examination was planned change. Such revision will be in accordance with civil service laws and rules and all applicants will be notified.

General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.

Accepted applicants must provide proof of identification at each in-person test session. Acceptable identification consists of a photo identification card or two forms of signed identification.
