Experience: Five years of professional electrical engineering experience, at least two years of which shall have been in design and inspection work in several of the fields described in the "TYPICAL TASKS" below, and comparable in responsibility to that of an Associate Electrical Engineer in the California state service. and

Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in electrical engineering. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

TYPICAL TASKS

Plans, organizes, assigns and checks work, gives instructions and assistance, evaluates performance, and makes technical decisions in connection with the supervision of the work of a group of designers and drafting technicians engaged in making complete designs, construction drawings and specifications of major electrical installations, such as complete office illumination, special psychiatric hospital and maximum security prison illumination, all types of sports area lighting, underground and overhead distribution systems, substations, communication systems, radio and sound systems, fire reporting and alarm systems, and special electrical controls for refrigeration and air-conditioning; reviews and supervises the checking of plans, designs, and quantities; writes technical specifications; supervises the construction of major electrical installations and makes field investigations and surveys; dictates correspondence and prepares reports.

Eligible List Information

A Departmental Open eligible list for the SENIOR ELECTRICAL ENGINEER Classification will be established for:

  • Department of General Services

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 12 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Resulting Eligibility List(s) will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of California.

PLEASE NOTE: This examination is designed to gain an overall assessment of your education, training, and experience as it directly relates to the duties and the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position. Possession of specific education is not required to be successful in this examination; however, such achievements may substitute for desirable levels of experience. All components of this examination have been carefully validated by tying them directly to job requirements and documenting their relevance to the position.

Tasks
  1. Providing guidance and technical direction to peers, engineers, designers, and delineators/draft persons to make complete designs, construction drawings, specifications, studies, and estimates of major electrical installations in accordance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., California Electrical Code, California Building Code, California Fire Code Title 24 Part 9, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code [NFPA 72], California Energy Code Title 24 Part 6, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace [NFPA 70E]).
  2. Reviewing and supervising the plans, designs, quantities, and code compliance with various project disciplines (e.g., architectural, landscape, structural, electrical, mechanical, civil, estimating) to ensure quality and completeness of work, within budget and project scope.
  3. Supervising the construction of major electrical installations to ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, State, and industry design standards.
  4. Performing handwritten or computer aided engineering computations (e.g., load calculations, voltage drop, short circuit, conduit, conductor sizing) in order to determine proper sizes and quantities of electrical systems and components.
  5. Performing lighting analysis (e.g., Title 24 compliance, photometric calculations) using handwritten or computer-aided calculations to provide adequate lighting levels in conformance with applicable codes.
  6. Conducting engineering field investigations at existing or potential job sites for the installation of electrical systems using surveys, analytical skills and standard measuring devices (e.g., cameras, tools, equipment).
  7. Conducting on-site inspections of electrical installations for compliance with plans, specifications and applicable codes (e.g., California Electrical Code, California Building Code, California Fire Code Title 24 Part 9, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code [NFPA 72], California Energy Code Title 24 Part 6, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace [NFPA 70E]) using standard measuring devices (e.g., cameras, tools, equipment) in accordance with state and industry design standards and client needs.
  8. Preparing designs, plans, layouts, and engineering calculations to produce documents suitable for estimating, bidding, and construction using computer aided design and drafting (e.g., hand-drafting, AutoCAD, Revit, Excel, EnergyPro) in accordance with organizational guidelines.
  9. Reviewing and coordinating electrical drawings with other project disciplines (e.g., architectural, landscape, structural, electrical, mechanical, civil, estimating) to ensure compatibility, constructability and code compliance (e.g., California Electrical Code, California Building Code, California Fire Code Title 24 Part 9, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code [NFPA 72], California Energy Code Title 24 Part 6, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace [NFPA 70E]) of electrical systems.
  10. Designing and detailing electrical systems (e.g., underground feeder & branch power distribution, substations, radio and sound communications, fire reporting and alarm, complete interior and exterior illumination, sports area lighting, electrical controls for refrigeration, air-conditioning) to meet the needs of various clients and State agencies.
  11. Managing electrical projects by facilitating their design and construction to meet the project scope in accordance with organizational guidelines.
  12. Reviewing contractor submittals of electrical equipment, shop drawings, product information and reports to determine compliance with plans and specifications.
  13. Writing technical specifications to set forth product requirements and installation methods in accordance with contract drawings.
  14. Preparing correspondence (e.g., submittal responses, transmittals, emails, letters, memos, Requests for Information [RFI]) in accordance with organizational and specification guidelines.
  15. Preparing engineering reports (e.g., infrastructure studies, schematic project proposals, feasibility studies) to assist clients in prioritizing projects, determining project funding, and establishing project scope.
  16. Utilizing computer programs (e.g., Microsoft Project, Primavera, Adobe Acrobat, AutoCAD, Revit, EnergyPro) to ensure the timely and accurate completion of projects.
  17. Maintaining cooperative working relationships with peers, consultants, contractors, and other engineering personnel to ensure the timely and accurate completion of projects.

If you meet the requirements stated on this examination bulletin, you may take this examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. Your performance in the examination described in this bulletin will be rated against a predetermined job-related rating, and all applicants who pass will be ranked according to their scores.

Department of General Services reserves the right to revise the examination plan to better meet the needs of the service, if the circumstances under which this examination was planned change. Such revision will be in accordance with civil service laws and rules and all applicants will be notified.

General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.

Accepted applicants must provide proof of identification at each in-person test session. Acceptable identification consists of a photo identification card or two forms of signed identification.
