Minimum Qualifications

All applicants must meet the education and/or experience requirements as stated on this exam bulletin to be accepted to the examination.

Unless otherwise stated in the Minimum Qualifications, qualifying experience may be combined on a proportionate basis if the requirements stated below include more than one pattern and are distinguished as "Either" 1, "or" 2, "or" 3, etc. For example, applicants possessing qualifying experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 1 and additional experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 2 may be accepted to an examination as meeting 100% of the overall experience requirement.

Possession of a valid California license as a hairdresser and cosmetician. and Three years of experience as a licensed hairdresser and cosmetician including one year as a manager of a licensed cosmetological establishment with responsibility for ordering supplies and equipment.

00102091 - BEAUTY SHOP MANAGER

Typical Tasks
Supervises inmates, wards or resident helpers performing the various standard beauty shop personal services for inmates, wards or residents, including shampooing, waving, and cutting hair, cleaning, massaging, and applying cosmetics to face and neck, and manicuring hands; trains inmates, wards or residents in the various personal grooming practices; discusses beauty treatments with inmates, wards or residents receiving service, stimulates their interest and pride in their personal appearance, and suggests specific beauty treatments to be followed; personally performs beauty services for inmates, wards or residents requiring special attention; works with medical and therapy personnel in coordinating beauty shop treatments with other therapeutic activities for inmates, wards or residents rehabilitation; observes and makes reports on inmates', wards' or residents' progress; requisitions supplies and equipment; maintains records of beauty shop operations; observes and enforces standards of shop sanitation and safety; arranges for and supervises the maintenance of beauty shop equipment.

Special Personal Characteristics

Comprehension of and sympathetic understanding of the problems of the mentally and physically handicapped; patience and emotional stability.

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Examination Information

Applicants must submit their exam application AND complete the exam during the same cut-off period. For example, if you submit your exam application on July 8, 2024 (which is after the July 5, 2024 cut-off) you must complete the exam by August 2, 2024.

Components that are due with your application will be scored and will count toward your final examination result. Failure to submit these items may result in disqualification or elimination from the examination.

A final score of 70% must be attained to be placed on the eligible list.

In addition to evaluating the applicant's relative knowledge, skill and ability as demonstrated by quality and breadth of education/experience, emphasis in each test component will be on measuring competitively, relative to job demands, each applicant's:

Knowledge of: Principles and practices of cosmetology and skill in their application, including treatment of hair, face, and hands; beauty shop apparatus and skill in its use; required practices of antisepsis, sterilization, sanitation, and safety as applied to beauty shop operations; principles of effective supervision.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; direct the work of others; manage a large beauty shop; train inmates, wards or residents in beauty shop services; establish rapport with inmates, wards or residents; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; keep records and prepare reports.

Eligible List Information

A Servicewide Open eligible list for the BEAUTY SHOP MANAGER Classification will be established for:

  • State of California

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 12 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Resulting Eligibility List(s) will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of California.

Veterans' Preference will be granted for this examination. Veterans' Preference is an assistance program for veterans, veteran widows and widowers, and spouses of 100% disabled veterans who seek employment with the state. Veterans' Preference is also extended to currently serving military members nearing their retirement or separation date.

You are not eligible for Veteran's Preference if you are:

(Permanent civil service status is the status of an employee who is lawfully retained in his/her position after completion of the applicable probationary period. This does not include limited term).

Training & Experience Examination Preview

Instructions:
Rate your knowledge performing specific job-related tasks, knowledge skill or ability.

Tasks:
1. Shampoo and condition patients’ hair using a cape and/or necessary cleansing products to ensure hygiene is maintained and cleaned.
2. Drape and pin protective cloths around patients’ shoulders to prevent hair from falling on neck and clothes.
3. Style patients’ hair using a comb, scissors, and/or blow dryer to ensure hair is groomed and cleaned.
4. Cut and trim hair according to patients' instructions or current hairstyles using clippers, combs, hand-held blow driers, and scissors.
5. Provide waxing services (e.g., eyebrows, facial hairs, mustache) using a tweezer, wooden spatula, and/or materials appropriate to strip off hair.
6. Shape and trim beards and moustaches using scissors.
7. Provide patients with a cloth to cool and numb the redness on the skin before and after shaving/waxing.
8. Clean the skin directly with cleanser to sanitize surface area before and after shaving/waxing.
9. Schedule and track appointments using a calendar book for providing cosmetology services for patients.
10. Record services provided to patients in order to track appointments.
11. Clean and sterilize scissors, combs, clippers, and other instruments to ensure tools are sanitized.
12. Clean work stations and sweep floors to ensure area is clean at all times.
13. Make copies of patient appointments to provide manager with scheduling and tracking purposes to ensure that written policies and procedures are in place and followed.
14. Perform cosmetology services on patients using nail polishes and/or cosmetics.
15. Clean and maintain the barber shop and/or beauty shop to ensure it meets health and safety standards.
16. Maintain inventory and requisitions of supplies and equipment to ensure adequate supplies on hand.

If you meet the requirements stated on this examination bulletin, you may take this examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. Your performance in the examination described in this bulletin will be rated against a predetermined job-related rating, and all applicants who pass will be ranked according to their scores.

Department of State Hospitals reserves the right to revise the examination plan to better meet the needs of the service, if the circumstances under which this examination was planned change. Such revision will be in accordance with civil service laws and rules and all applicants will be notified.

General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.

Accepted applicants must provide proof of identification at each in-person test session. Acceptable identification consists of a photo identification card or two forms of signed identification.
