Minimum Qualifications

All applicants must meet the education and/or experience requirements as stated on this exam bulletin to be accepted to the examination.

Unless otherwise stated in the Minimum Qualifications, qualifying experience may be combined on a proportionate basis if the requirements stated below include more than one pattern and are distinguished as "Either" 1, "or" 2, "or" 3, etc. For example, applicants possessing qualifying experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 1 and additional experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 2 may be accepted to an examination as meeting 100% of the overall experience requirement.

One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Hospital Worker or Hospital Aid.

Experience: Six months' experience working in a general acute hospital performing duties of a Medical Supply Technician/ Attendant.

00108015 - MEDICAL SUPPLY TECHNICIAN

Typical Tasks

Receives and disassembles soiled medical equipment/supplies from units prior to processing; decontaminates surgical instruments and other equipment using prescribed detergents and/or disinfectants utilizing autoclaving and/or antiseptic solutions, sterilizes surgical linens, equipment, and/or supplies; assures that all trays and packs are prepared according to procedures, including date stamping and labeling; ensures that all supply orders are filled in a timely manner; maintains adequate supply of sterile items; ensures all equipment is clean and in working condition; ensures all supplies are not outdated through proper stock rotation; distributes supplies to units; performs related duties as assigned.

In addition to evaluating the applicant's relative knowledge, skill and ability as demonstrated by quality and breadth of education/experience, emphasis in each test component will be on measuring competitively, relative to job demands, each applicant's:

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; clean and care for medical and surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies; learn decontamination and sterilization and proper aseptic techniques, stock rotation, the organization of a medical supply department; operate automatic sterilization equipment; recognize surgical/medical equipment necessary to fill requisitions; take instructions and follow established procedures.

Eligible List Information

A Servicewide Open eligible list for the MEDICAL SUPPLY TECHNICIAN Classification will be established for:

  • State of California

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 12 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Resulting Eligibility List(s) will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of California.

Veterans' Preference will be granted for this examination. Veterans' Preference is an assistance program for veterans, veteran widows and widowers, and spouses of 100% disabled veterans who seek employment with the state. Veterans' Preference is also extended to currently serving military members nearing their retirement or separation date.

You are not eligible for Veteran's Preference if you are:

  • A veteran who has been dishonorably discharged or released.
  • A veteran, widow or widower of a veteran, or spouse of a 100 percent disabled veteran who currently has permanent civil service status. (Permanent civil service status is the status of an employee who is lawfully retained in his/her position after completion of the applicable probationary period. This does not include limited term).

Training & Experience Examination Preview

Instructions:
Rate your knowledge performing specific job-related tasks, knowledge skill or ability.

Tasks:
1. Receiving and disassembling soiled medical equipment and supplies from units prior to processing.
2. Decontaminating and sterilizing surgical instruments, surgical linens, and other equipment using appropriate detergents, disinfectants, autoclaving and antiseptic solutions under manufacturer instruction guidelines.
3. Operating all equipment needed to sterilize items for facility use (e.g., automated sterilizer) to ensure efficient unit operations.
4. Operating and maintaining steam autoclaves, keeping records of loads completed, items in loads, and maintaining procedures performed in accordance with facility standards.
5. Preparing all trays and packs by washing, drying, date stamping, and labeling according to facility procedures.
6. Cleaning, disinfecting, and inspecting the operation of equipment (i.e., Intravenous (I.V.) Pumps, Feeding Pumps, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) equipment, Hyperthermia machine, Automated Defibrillator, Defibrillator, Suction machines, Pulse Oximeters) in accordance with facility standards.
7. Overseeing that all equipment is clean and in working condition, free from leaks, worn or loose parts, or other indications of disrepair to ensure efficient unit operations.
8. Performing initial inspection of tools/equipment prior to usage, including examination, testing, and preventive maintenance.
9. Assessing equipment and observing gauges to detect malfunctions and to ensure equipment is operating to appropriate standards.
10. Purging wastes from equipment by connecting equipment to water sources and flushing water through systems to ensure efficient unit operations.
11. Cleaning all carts in dispensing rooms and cabinets utilizing appropriate cleaning supplies in accordance to facility standards.
12. Overseeing that all supplies are not outdated through proper stock rotation to ensure efficient unit operations.
13. Distributing medical supplies and medical equipment to units as necessary to ensure efficient unit operations.
14. Managing the ongoing inventory of all supplies, both on shelf and dispensed throughout the facility to ensure efficient unit operations.
15. Ordering oxygen and related supplies to keep facility adequately supplied at all times to ensure efficient unit operations.
16. Sorting and folding laundry, linens, and textiles as needed according to facility standards.
17. Overseeing that all equipment and supplies are prepared according to facility standards, including date stamping and labeling.
18. Examining stock medical supplies and medical equipment for expiration dates, recalled items, and remove outdated supplies from shelves as appropriate.
19. Communicating needs of the facility to management in regards to equipment and/or tools used in unit.
20. Reporting and documenting unsafe equipment or environmental conditions to management in order to ensure safe unit operations.
21. Reporting incidents, work related injuries or illnesses to supervising Registered Nurse (RN) by properly documenting in the first aid log.
22. Participating in routine drills by adhering to facility procedures in order to maintain safe unit operations.
KSACPs:
1. Knowledge of the properties of soaps, detergents, and sterilizers commonly utilized by the facility to clean and sanitize tools and equipment.
2. Knowledge of chemicals and how to properly handle, mix, and manage spills in accordance to facility standards.
3. Knowledge of the chemical usage, danger signs, and disposal methods.
4. Knowledge of the principles of asepsis techniques to maintain cleanliness standards.
5. Knowledge of emergency plan, routine drills, and their purpose in ensuring the safety and security of facility staff, patients, and visitors.
6. Knowledge of forms and policies needed for dispensing medical equipment and supplies.
7. Knowledge of the Personal Protective Equipment (e.g., face masks, gloves) necessary to safely work with tools, equipment, and cleaning/sanitizing supplies.
8. Ability to properly use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (e.g., face masks, gloves) while in the decontamination room and other rooms as necessary.
9. Ability to physically clean and care for medical and surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
10. Ability to operate automatic sterilization equipment to properly sanitize medical equipment.
11. Ability to conduct quality control procedures by conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality and/or performance.
12. Ability to properly load the sanitizer ensuring all parameters have been adjusted and are accurate.
13. Ability to monitor and interpret gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure sanitizing machines are working properly.
14. Ability to properly package, wrap, and fold sterile packs to prepare for unit/facility usage.

If you meet the requirements stated on this examination bulletin, you may take this examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. Your performance in the examination described in this bulletin will be rated against a predetermined job-related rating, and all applicants who pass will be ranked according to their scores.

Department of State Hospitals reserves the right to revise the examination plan to better meet the needs of the service, if the circumstances under which this examination was planned change. Such revision will be in accordance with civil service laws and rules and all applicants will be notified.

General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.
