00103801 - SUPERVISING HEALTH PHYSICIST

Either One

Two years of experience in performing the duties of a Senior Health Physicist in California state service.

Or Two

Six or more years of increasingly responsible professional experience in health physics or a closely related field, at least three years of which must have included supervisory responsibility for a major program in health physics or radiologic health.
 

AND

Graduation from college with a major in radiologic health, radiologic science, health physics, engineering, mathematics, physical science, life science or a closely related field. (Possession of a Master's Degree in Radiologic Health, Radiologic Science, Health Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Physical Science, or Life Science may be substituted for two years of the required general experience.)

The required degree must have been obtained from a recognized U.S. university or from a foreign university approved by the Bureau of Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education under the provision of California Education Code Chapter 3, Part 59, Division 10.

Position Description

00103801 - SUPERVISING HEALTH PHYSICIST

This is the second supervisory level. Incumbents, under general direction, plan, organize, direct and evaluate a number of statewide radiation regulatory programs involving the surveillance and licensing of radiation sources and the evaluation, regulation, and control of industrial (limited to licensing only), research, medical, diagnostic, and therapeutic uses of radiation; coordinate, integrate, and evaluate programs and activities relating to licensing and inspections and insure compliance with State regulations; evaluate and resolve unusually complex technical and administrative problems in connection with license issuance, amendment, suspension, revocation, or denial; approve inclusion of specialized conditions and other unusual provisions in licenses; plan and direct a continuing program of staff training and development; propose new rules and regulations; coordinate the programs with related activities of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the State Division of Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Health and Welfare, local health agencies, and other interested and affected agencies; keep abreast of technical development in radiation use and radiation protection; plan and direct special studies and investigations; address interested groups; prepare articles for publication; and do other related work.

 

Positions in this class are supervisory. Incumbents perform duties which are substantially different from those of subordinates and have the authority, in the interest of management, to: hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward or discipline other employees, or responsibly direct them, or adjust their grievances, or effectively recommend such actions. The intent is to exclude lead persons.

Examination Information

The examination will consist of a Qualifications Assessment and is the sole component of the Supervising Health Physicist examination. To obtain a position on the eligible list, a minimum score of 70% must be received. The Qualifications Assessment is designed to elicit specific information regarding each candidate’s education, training, and experience relative to the testing classification. Responses to the questionnaire will be assessed based on pre-determined rating criteria.

The Qualifications Assessment package will be emailed to the applicant in the form of a survey. Please monitor your email account’s spam, junk, bulk, etc. folder(s) as the examination email may be filtered depending on your specific account settings.

The participating department’s reserves the right to revise the examination plan to better meets the needs of the service if the circumstances under which this examination has changed. Such revision will be in accordance with civil service law and rules and all competitors will be notified.

Eligible List Information

A Servicewide Open eligible list for the SUPERVISING HEALTH PHYSICIST Classification will be established for:

  • State of California

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 24 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Resulting Eligibility List(s) will be used to fill vacancies in

  • Contra Costa County
  • Orange County
  • Sacramento County

Your performance in the examination described in this bulletin will be rated against a predetermined job-related rating, and all applicants who pass will be ranked according to their scores.

General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.
