Tasks:
1: Perform highly complex professional level research through selection, or the reference use of books, electronic media, and other library materials to assist patients, staff and other facilities in acquiring medical resources, recreational/educational materials, and legal information and articles.
2: Answer complex and/or difficult reference questions for others (e.g. patients and staff) to deliver library assistance by conducting comprehensive reference interviews with staff and patients and performing research utilizing bibliographic databases and the Internet to locate books, journal articles, and audiovisual materials as requested.
3: Catalog and classify library materials (e.g. books, pamphlets, and audiovisual software, etc.) to provide ease of access for patients and staff within the facility utilizing the department approved cataloging systems (e.g. National Library of Medicine, Library of Congress, etc.).
4: Assist others (e.g. patients, staff, volunteers, etc.) by teaching library patrons in basic computer skills to search computerized databases (e.g. legal, educational/ recreational).
5: Maintain accurate circulation and inter/intra-library loan records to ensure proper documentation is maintained in order to track library activities as appropriate.
6: Apply the basic philosophy, principles, and theories of library service
7: Perform clerical duties including typing, filing, answering the phone, processing overdue notices, photocopying, materials circulation, shelving, and ordering supplies as necessary.
8: Oversee, develop and implement processes, services and programs by evaluating and assessing facility proposals and requests in collaboration with administration and program management to ensure library needs are fulfilled.
9: Analyze needs for procurement of materials/services (e.g. quotes, multiple bids, sole source, purchasing limits, etc.) in the selection and delivery of library goods and services.
10: Coordinate and/or process intra/inter-library loan requests for patients, staff, state agencies, and external organizations by providing the appropriate requested library materials utilizing the intra/inter-library loan process.
11: Order materials and supplies (e.g. journals, books, databases, newspapers, etc.) by identifying library needs and processing purchase orders in accordance with State procurement policies. Related to purchasing?
12: Publicize library services to staff and patients through written and oral communication (e.g. presentations, written publications, etc.) to educate staff and patients regarding services available.
13: Attend meetings for appropriate committees (e.g. training advisory, forensic conference, medical staff, library, etc.) to represent the library and/or education department as requested.
14: Maintain current awareness of trends in mental health and medical fields, information services, and computers to effectively provide library services.
15: Create, maintain, and update a mobile library in order to enhance the opportunity of access to library services to patients.
Knowledge, Skill, or Ability:
1: Knowledge of principles, trends, and practices of professional library work (e.g. research, collection development, etc.).
2: Knowledge of modern library methods, techniques, and terminology to effectively provide library services.
3: Knowledge of library purposes and trends to fulfill library patrons’ needs.
4: Knowledge of standard reference materials and databases to effectively research and assist in research.
5: Knowledge of complex bibliographic terminology to efficiently apply search techniques.
6: Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with library users, co-workers, supervisors, and others contacted during the course of work.
7: Ability to communicate effectively with others (e.g. staff, patients, volunteers, vendors) both orally and in writing.
8: Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other state, regional and local libraries by communicating effectively with accuracy and professionalism.
9: Ability to proficiently utilize a personal computer (e.g. word processing, e-mail, electronic databases, etc.) to perform essential job functions and to ensure efficiency in library services.
10: Ability to analyze situations and take appropriate actions, following departmental policies and procedures to maintain a safe and secure environment.
11: Ability to apply professional knowledge to the practical problems in a variety of library settings
12: Ability to evaluate donated materials (e.g. books, journals, magazines, etc.) and distribute them accordingly.
13: Ability to assume leadership and apply creativity in the formulation of needed changes in methods and procedures.
14: Ability to teach others basic computer skills (e.g. print, e-mail, use Microsoft Office and the Internet).
15: Ability to teach others how to utilize library resources (e.g. online databases/catalogs, locating/retrieving books, etc.).
