NOTE: All applicants must meet the education and/or experience requirements by the cutoff date to be accepted into the examination. Part-time or full-time jobs, regardless of whether paid or volunteer positions, and inside or outside California state service will count toward experience.

Unless otherwise stated in the Minimum Qualifications, qualifying experience may be combined on a proportionate basis if the requirements stated below include more than one pattern and are distinguished as "Either" 1, "or" 2, "or" 3, etc. For example, applicants possessing qualifying experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 1 and additional experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 2 may be accepted to an examination as meeting 100% of the overall experience requirement.

Either I

Two years of experience as a Telecommunications Facilities Technician I, California Highway Patrol.

Or II

Experience: Six years of varied experience in the Mechanical Trades, which must have included experience working in at least three of the following areas: electrical, plumbing, heating, water, and sewer systems; repairing various mechanical and automotive equipment; and performing minor building construction, repair, and painting. AND

Education: Completion of 576 hours of formalized technical instruction relating to Maintenance Mechanic/Technician offered by such established programs as: Job Corps; Skill Centers; ROP; Trades Schools; Military; and Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA). (An Associate of Arts Degree or Certificate of Completion in Mechanical Technology from a California Community College, which must have included at least 12 semester units of instruction in mechanical trades courses, may be substituted for the 576 hours of the technical instruction.) Students who are within six months of completing their degree will be admitted to the examination, but they must present evidence of completion prior to appointment. (Two additional qualifying years of experience may be substituted for the required education.)

Position Description

00105126 - TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITIES TECHNICIAN II, CHP

This is the working, project leader level. Incumbents maintain fire safety at mountaintop sites; operate various types of gas-driven, electric, or nonpowered tools; perform maintenance and minor repairs on electrical systems; perform miscellaneous minor construction and repair work; inspect, maintain, and repair plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems; operate tractor, backhoe, forklift, and other equipment requiring a Class C driver license; perform tasks associated with minor concrete work; install and brace radio equipment racks; requisition building materials and miscellaneous supplies; apply commercially available pesticides and herbicides for weed and rodent control; keep tools and equipment in good condition; keep records and prepare reports; plan, design, and execute on-site construction; install, maintain, and repair complex electrical systems; operate and perform minor adjustments to equipment such as cranes, backhoes, and SNO-CAT; assemble, erect, and/or remove communications towers; install radio antennas and microwave dishes; climb towers; design, install, and maintain HVAC systems; and design and install Liquefied Petroleum (LP) gas lines.

Special Personal Characteristics

Good physical and mental health; superior mechanical ability; willingness to travel and work irregular hours; ability to get along well with people in a daily travel status environment; willingness to perform work, after safety training, on antenna systems and towers for purposes of installation; and maintenance of antenna systems and their components.

Additional Disirable Qualification

Ability to climb heights up to 100 feet.

Eligible List Information

A Departmental Open eligible list for the TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITIES TECHNICIAN II, CHP Classification will be established for:

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 24 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

    Hiring Information

    Background Investigation: The California Highway Patrol conducts a background investigation to determine the competitor’s suitability for employment. Information collected for a background investigation after the examination is distinct from that required on the Examination / Employment Application (STD. 678, Rev. 12-21 or later), which is completed prior to the examination. You may be requested to divulge conviction history on the background investigation form that is not required of you when completing the STD. 678. Fingerprints of competitors are also taken as part of the background investigation.

    Medical Examination: The California Highway Patrol requires a medical examination be conducted of applicants for positions in this classification by a licensed physician to determine the competitor’s suitability for employment. The medical examination ensures competitors are free from any medical condition that might adversely affect job performance.

Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. Your performance in the examination described in this bulletin will be rated against a predetermined job-related rating, and all applicants who pass will be ranked according to their scores.

    California Highway Patrol reserves the right to revise the examination plan to better meet the needs of the service, if the circumstances under which this examination was planned change. Such revision will be in accordance with civil service laws and rules and all applicants will be notified.

    General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

    Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

    High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.
