Tasks:
1: Install, repair, and maintain locks using hand and power tools (e.g., screwdrivers, picks, drills, chisel, hammer, etc.).
2: Cut new or duplicate keys for cylinders, cabinet locks, and padlocks using a variety of key machines (e.g., computerized and manual duplicate key cutters, key cutting machines, punches, duplicating machines, code cutters, etc.).
3: Perform installation and repair of door knobs, door strikes, mortise locks, and stand-alone or network access locks.
4: Rekey cylinder locks using followers, pins, drivers, springs, etc. to maintain/develop master key systems and change lock combinations.
5: Replace damaged or worn lock actuators, power boards, motherboards, row boards, door latches, faceplates with solenoid, and batteries on electronic key boxes.
6: Pick or circumvent locks, padlocks, safes, and vehicles using locksmith picking/bypass tools, drills, and cutters to gain entrance.
7: Order parts, supplies, and equipment by assessing current inventory to ensure appropriate supplies are on hand.
8: Write reports using hard copy or electronic files to document work orders and maintain logs of tasks.
9: Troubleshoot and repair door position and detention hardware switches.
10: Dispose broken or obsolete keys by smelting, crushing or grinding keys, transporting to key disposal sites, recycling keys, etc. to destroy key waste.
Knowledge, Skill, or Ability:
1: Knowledge of the principles and methods of materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade of a locksmith.
2: Knowledge of safety practices, rules, and safety equipment utilized in the daily activities of a locksmith.
3: Knowledge of door hardware repair and maintenance.
4: Skill to re-key cylinders to reconfigure to a new key.
5: Skill to repair locks and door hardware to ensure locks are in working order.
6: Skill to duplicate and originate keys.
7: Skill to install and adjust door closers to ensure proper swing and speed of doors.
8: Skill to operate computer controlled systems (e.g., key panels, etc.).
9: Ability to inventory supplies and equipment to maintain a logical and organized system.
10: Ability to use a master key system to create, manage, and implement the systems’ information.
11: Ability to listen and comprehend verbal and written instructions to carry out assigned tasks.
12: Ability to communicate orally and in to a variety of audiences.
13: Ability to install and adjust various hardware (e.g., cylindrical, tubular, and mortise locks, deadbolts, cabinet locks, etc.).
14: Ability to identify information, materials, and resources needed to complete projects and assignments.
15: Ability to read technical documents (e.g., shop drawings, plans, specifications, etc.).
