Minimum Qualifications

All applicants must meet the education and/or experience requirements as stated on this exam bulletin to be accepted to the examination.

Unless otherwise stated in the Minimum Qualifications, qualifying experience may be combined on a proportionate basis if the requirements stated below include more than one pattern and are distinguished as "Either" 1, "or" 2, "or" 3, etc. For example, applicants possessing qualifying experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 1 and additional experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 2 may be accepted to an examination as meeting 100% of the overall experience requirement.

Either I

One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Service Assistant (Warehouse and Stores).

Or II

One year of experience as a stock or shipping clerk.

Special Personal Characteristics: Neatness and willingness to do heavy manual work.

State Civil Service Out of Class Experience:  A completion of an “out-of-class (OOC) assignment memorandum”, dated within one year of assignment completion, is required to use OOC experience to meet the minimum qualifications for examination purposes.  Employees may obtain this documentation from their Classification and Pay Analyst or institutional Personnel Liaison.  OOC experience without the required documentation cannot be considered for examination purposes.


Position Description

00101509 - STOCK CLERK

Under direction, to perform journeyperson work in the receiving, storing, issuing, and shipping of supplies; may instruct, lead or supervise incarcerated persons, wards or resident workers; and do other related work.

Additional Desirable Qualifications: Equivalent to graduation from high school.

In addition to evaluating the applicant's relative knowledge, skill and ability as demonstrated by quality and breadth of education/experience, emphasis in each test component will be on measuring competitively, relative to job demands, each applicant's:

Knowledge of:

  1. Methods and practices used in receiving, storing, packing, and shipping supplies;
  2. Usual forms, methods, and practices of the shipping department of a governmental or commercial organization;
  3. Methods of taking inventories and maintaining inventory records.

Ability to:

  1. Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance;
  2. Make rapid and accurate computations in connection with stockroom work;
  3. Follow oral and written directions.

Eligible List Information

A Servicewide Open eligible list for the STOCK CLERK Classification will be established for:

  • State of California

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 12 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Resulting Eligibility List(s) will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of California.

Veterans' Preference will be granted for this examination. Veterans' Preference is an assistance program for veterans, veteran widows and widowers, and spouses of 100% disabled veterans who seek employment with the state. Veterans' Preference is also extended to currently serving military members nearing their retirement or separation date.

You are not eligible for Veteran's Preference if you are:

  • A veteran who has been dishonorably discharged or released.
  • A veteran, widow or widower of a veteran, or spouse of a 100 percent disabled veteran who currently has permanent civil service status. (Permanent civil service status is the status of an employee who is lawfully retained in his/her position after completion of the applicable probationary period. This does not include limited term).

Preview the Stock Clerk Exam

  1. Accept stock and/or shipping deliveries from outside sources and other departments.
  2. Answer customers' questions about inventory to advise them on inventory selection and improve customer service.
  3. Assist other workers with stock and/or shipping orders to ensure they are completed.
  4. Verify the accuracy of the stock and/or shipping deliveries.
  5. Broke down boxes and remove them from the building to keep areas orderly and safe.
  6. Verify merchandise received against invoices, purchase orders, dray tickets, bills of lading, or requisitions to confirm items and quantities received.
  7. Check expiration dates and rotate stock according to common operational methods such as “first in, first out” to ensure quality and usability.
  8. Maintain records to ensure an accurate inventory.
  9. Determine methods of storage taking into consideration temperature, humidity, height and weight limits, turnover, floor loading capacities, and required space.
  10. Ensure stock is available and accessible for use in possible emergencies.
  11. Ensure that incoming and outgoing packages are documented utilizing a tracking system.
  12. Ensure that customers are escorted by the appropriate staff within the facility.
  13. Handle, sort, and deliver packages and/or mail in compliance with facility policies and procedures.
  14. Advise customers on facility policies and procedures.
  15. Assist other workers on how to properly stock shelves.
  16. Clean floors and organize storage areas to avoid safety hazards.
  17. Maintain logs to track stock.
  18. Notify your immediate supervisor when merchandise reaches the reorder point to maintain adequate inventory levels.
  19. Operate handling equipment (e.g., hand trucks, dollies, stackers, platform lifts, forklifts) to transport packages, stock, and/or supplies.
  20. Pack requisitions using bags or cartons to fill/confirm supply orders.
  21. Palletize and tag stock before moving it to a designated location.
  22. Perform a physical inventory of merchandise.
  23. Investigate problems related to receiving, storing, issuing, and shipping of supplies.
  24. Report damaged and condemned inventory to ensure appropriate action is taken.
  25. Rotate seasonal stock to accommodate demand.
  26. Segregate and store stock to maintain an orderly flow of operations and distribution.
  27. Support the quality improvement processes to increase the efficiency of operations and conserve limited resources.
  28. Maintain perpetual inventory records.
  29. Transport outgoing packages/mail to service providers.
  30. Utilize automated material identification equipment (e.g., Bar Code wands, computer terminal, laser scanner, postal metering equipment) to increase efficiency and ensure accurate systematic inventory levels.
  31. Package inventory for delivery.

If you meet the requirements stated on this examination bulletin, you may take this examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. Your performance in the examination described in this bulletin will be rated against a predetermined job-related rating, and all applicants who pass will be ranked according to their scores.

California Correctional Health Care Services reserves the right to revise the examination plan to better meet the needs of the service, if the circumstances under which this examination was planned change. Such revision will be in accordance with civil service laws and rules and all applicants will be notified.

General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.

Accepted applicants must provide proof of identification at each in-person test session. Acceptable identification consists of a photo identification card or two forms of signed identification.
