Minimum Qualifications

All applicants must meet the education and/or experience requirements as stated on this exam bulletin to be accepted to the examination.

Unless otherwise stated in the Minimum Qualifications, qualifying experience may be combined on a proportionate basis if the requirements stated below include more than one pattern and are distinguished as "Either" 1, "or" 2, "or" 3, etc. For example, applicants possessing qualifying experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 1 and additional experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 2 may be accepted to an examination as meeting 100% of the overall experience requirement.

00101944 - EXPOSITION POLICE OFFICER

Applicants may be admitted into the examination without meeting the requirements within the “All Levels" section, but the applicant must meet those requirements prior to appointment.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles; and
  • Must meet the peace officer selection standards developed by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training per Penal Code section 13510, subdivision (a).; and
  • Must meet minimum requirements for peace officers outlined in Government Code Section 1031, et. seq.; and
  • Applicants for positions in this class are required to pass a drug screening test. Testing of current employees who are applicants in an examination or who are transferring is permitted only if the person does not have a current appointment to a class for which drug testing is a requirement; and
  • Must be at least 21 years of age; and
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Exposition Police Officer, Range B
In addition to what is required for all levels:

Completion of any California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) accredited Basic Training Law Enforcement Academy. Out-of-state candidates who possess a POST Basic Course Waiver may use it to substitute for the required completion of any California POST accredited Law Enforcement Academy.

Applicants may be admitted into the examination without meeting the requirements within the “All Levels" section, but the applicant must meet those requirements prior to appointment.

Basic Requirements:

     Application must include: 

         •  Proof of Basic Academy Certificate, or
         •  Basic Academy waiver (out-of-state), or
         •  Transfer from a law enforcement agency with Peace Officer experience under CA Penal Code § 13510.1 (2021).

Special Physical Requirements:

Possession and maintenance of sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during physical, mental and emotional stressful and emergency situations encountered on the job and sufficient hearing and vision to effectively perform the essential functions of the job.

Position Description

00101944 - EXPOSITION POLICE OFFICER

Under the direction of the Exposition Police Sergeant, the Exposition Police Officer patrols the buildings and grounds of Exposition Park to aid in crime prevention, protection of life and property, and maintain peace and order. Exposition Police Officers in Range B are peace officers under California Penal Code Section 830.3 and are authorized to carry firearms on and off duty. The Exposition Police Officer is responsible for a full range of public safety services including, but not limited to 1) emergency response; 2) preventative patrol; 3) law enforcement; 4) initial and follow-up investigation of criminal activity or unusual incidents; 5) special event security; 6) crowd control and traffic management activities; 7) parking enforcement; and 8) escort of guests and employees of the park.

The Department of Public Safety operates under the organizational structure of the Office of Exposition Park Management. The DPS mission is to protect human life and property, maintain order, and provide essential services to staff and visitors at Exposition Park.

Other Information:
• Must be able to work 40 hours per week, including weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime, if needed.
• Must be willing to report for duty at any time during emergencies.
• Valid California Drivers’ License and good driving record required.

  • Previous professional experience in law enforcement and/or physical security.
  • Education beyond the 12th grade.
  • All employees must have general qualifications as described by California Code of Regulations, title 2, section 172.

In addition to evaluating the applicant's relative knowledge, skill and ability as demonstrated by quality and breadth of education/experience, emphasis in each test component will be on measuring competitively, relative to job demands, each applicant's:

Knowledge of: commonly used sections of the California Vehicle Code, Health and Safety Code, Penal Code, and California Code of Regulations; laws of arrest, rules of evidence, and rights of persons; departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; basic criminal investigation processes and techniques; enforcement tactics and officer safety techniques; methods of traffic and pedestrian control; techniques and procedures for the safe operation of departmental vehicles and equipment; safety and survival procedures; and standard written English and procedures for completing reports and forms.

Ability to: interpret and apply a variety of laws, rules, and regulations to specific situations; protect the public and preserve property with due regard for the rights and safety of persons; read and write using standard English in a manner permitting accurate and succinct communication of specific observations and opinions; communicate effectively and tactfully with the public, supervisors, and peers; react calmly and maintain personal control in stressful situations; work effectively with others and independently; follow verbal and written directions; safely operate departmental vehicles, equipment, and radios; maintain, draw and/or discharge firearms competently, safely, and accurately; physically perform a variety of tasks including lifting and carrying injured persons and controlling combative subjects or prisoners; administer first aid; conduct basic criminal investigations; write legibly; prepare accurate and objective written reports using appropriate grammar, syntax, and spelling; and perform crowd control activities.

Eligible List Information

A Departmental Open eligible list for the EXPOSITION POLICE OFFICER Classification will be established for:

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 12 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Los Angeles in Exposition Park for the Office of Exposition Park Management.

Veterans' Preference will be granted for this examination. Veterans' Preference is an assistance program for veterans, veteran widows and widowers, and spouses of 100% disabled veterans who seek employment with the state. If you meet the requirements stated on this examination bulletin, you may take this examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. Your performance in the examination described in this bulletin will be rated against a predetermined job-related rating, and all applicants who pass will be ranked according to their scores.

CA Science Center reserves the right to revise the examination plan to better meet the needs of the service, if the circumstances under which this examination was planned change. Such revision will be in accordance with civil service laws and rules and all applicants will be notified.

General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.

Accepted applicants must provide proof of identification at each in-person test session. Acceptable identification consists of a photo identification card or two forms of signed identification.
