Minimum Qualifications

All applicants must meet the education and/or experience requirements as stated on this exam bulletin to be accepted to the examination.

Unless otherwise stated in the Minimum Qualifications, qualifying experience may be combined on a proportionate basis if the requirements stated below include more than one pattern and are distinguished as "Either" 1, "or" 2, "or" 3, etc. For example, applicants possessing qualifying experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 1 and additional experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 2 may be accepted to an examination as meeting 100% of the overall experience requirement.

Either I

Two years of experience performing the duties of a Deckhand, Fish and Game Boat, on vessels at least 30 feet in length operated by the Department of Fish and Game.

Or II

Three years of commercial fishing experience on seagoing vessels at least 30 feet in length which shall have included extensive experience in handling, repairing and constructing specialized fishing gear and tow nets.

Or III

Three years of experience operating and maintaining a commercial or government vessel at least 30 feet in length.

Position Description

00106986 - MATE, FISH AND GAME VESSEL

Under general supervision, directs the crew-members of: (1) a fisheries research vessel in the construction, repair, and preservation of fishing nets and other fishing and deck gear, and in the maintenance and repair of a fisheries vessel above deck; or (2) a marine patrol vessel in the proper handling and storage of fishing nets and other commercial and sport fishing gear and equipment, and in the maintenance and operation of the vessel, including auxiliary equipment; operates a Fish and Game vessel as necessary; and does other related work.

SPECIAL PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Satisfactory record as a law-abiding citizen; reliability, willingness to work unusual hours and on Saturday, Sundays, and holidays; willingness to go on extended sea cruises.


SPECIAL PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Physical agility and strength; ability to swim at least 50 yards and stay afloat at least five minutes, and immunity from seasickness.

In appraising the relative qualifications of candidates, consideration will be given to the extent and type of pertinent experience over and above that required under the "Minimum Qualifications" such as experience in handling, repairing and constructing purse seines, bottom trawling nets, lamparas (or other types of bait nets), drift or set gill nets and trammel nets, fyke nets, crab nets, drift or set line gear with 500 hooks or more, and steel salmon trolling gear with four lines or more; and experience aboard U.S. documented vessels of 25 tons gross weight (approximately 65 feet in length), and certification as a SCUBA diver.

Examination Information

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications prior to receiving an examination link. If applicants do not meet the minimum qualifications for the examination, they will need to submit additional information before moving forward in the examination process. This process may take TWO business days.

A final score of 70% must be attained to be placed on the eligible list.

Applicants will be sent a link through their Cal Careers account or by the email provided on your STD 678 application to complete the Fish and Game Assistant Chief Training and Experience Questionnaire. Applicants must take the exam within ten (10) business days after recieving the link to not get disqualified. 

This examination consists of a Training and Experience Questionnaire and is the sole component of the examination. To obtain a position on the eligible list, you must attain a minimum rating of 70%.


COMPETITORS WHO DO NOT COMPLETE THE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE QUESTIONNAIRE WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

In addition to evaluating the applicant's relative knowledge, skill and ability as demonstrated by quality and breadth of education/experience, emphasis in each test component will be on measuring competitively, relative to job demands, each applicant's:

Knowledge of:

1. Construction and use of various types of commercial fishing gear used on the Pacific Coast.

2. Construction, hanging, mending, and storage of nets of all types.

3. Principles of coastal navigation.

4. Seamanship, including the rigging, splicing, and tying of ropes and cables.

5. Rules of the road.

6. Principles of effective supervision and directing the work of others.


Ability to:

1. Identify, repair, and properly store nets of all types.

2. Direct the work of others.

3. Think and act quickly in emergencies.

4. Assist in non-enforcement patrol or marine research duties.

5. Cut, sew, bind, and maintain canvas.

6. Operate and maintain diesel and gasoline- powered boats up to 115 feet in length including auxiliary equipment.

7. Follow oral and written directions.

8. Row a boat.

9. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Eligible List Information

A Departmental Open eligible list for the MATE, FISH AND GAME VESSEL Classification will be established for:

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 12 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Resulting Eligibility List(s) will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of California.

Veterans' Preference will be granted for this examination. If you meet the requirements stated on this examination bulletin, you may take this examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. Your performance in the examination described in this bulletin will be rated against a predetermined job-related rating, and all applicants who pass will be ranked according to their scores.

Department of Fish and Wildlife reserves the right to revise the examination plan to better meet the needs of the service, if the circumstances under which this examination was planned change. Such revision will be in accordance with civil service laws and rules and all applicants will be notified.

General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.

Accepted applicants must provide proof of identification at each in-person test session. Acceptable identification consists of a photo identification card or two forms of signed identification.
