Under general direction, incumbents apply counseling intervention and psychotherapeutic techniques to identify and remediate cognitive, mental, and emotional issues, including personal growth, addiction, adjustment to disability, crisis intervention, psychosocial and environmental problems, within the scope of applicable Business and Professions Code(s), and license.
Incumbents apply counseling strategies that are implemented in the context of a professional, clinical, counseling relationship and use methods and techniques for understanding human behavior; conduct assessments for the purpose of establishing counseling goals, and objectives to empower individuals to deal adequately with life situations, reduce stress, experience growth, change behavior, and make well-informed rational decisions. Incumbent also conduct assessments designed to measure attitudes, abilities, achievements, interests, personal characteristics, disabilities, and mental, emotional, developmental, and behavioral aptitudes; collaborate with the interdisciplinary treatment team and other health professionals where applicable to assess patient needs; maintain case files; provide individual and group therapy as outlined in the treatment plan; follow up with individuals to determine effectiveness of treatment; respond to requests from clients/patients/incarcerated individuals, family members, courts, and community agencies; provide educational opportunities to family members to teach them about addiction or behavior disorders and help them develop strategies to support the individual's recovery; consult with colleagues and other staff on behavior management treatment issues; prepare verbal and written reports and provide court testimony, as required by law and policy, which can be used in all legal jurisdictions; participate in professional meetings, committees, training, and conferences; and participate in research and Quality Assurance and Improvement.
Incumbents shall refer patients to other licensed health care professionals in accordance with standardized procedures.
Preferred or Desirable Qualifications
An objective and empathic understanding of individuals diagnosed with substance use disorder or with remediate cognitive, mental, and emotional issues; flexibility to alter hours as needed; tolerance; tact; emotional stability; and respect for persons from diverse backgrounds, including nationality, race, ethnicity, ability, religious, gender, and other relevant factors.
Persons appointed to this position are reasonably expected to have and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during stressful (physical, mental, and emotional) situations encountered on the job without compromising their health and well - being or that of their fellow employees or that of incarcerated individuals.
Assignment may include sole responsibility for the supervision of incarcerated individuals and/or the protection of personal and real property.
All employees shall have general qualifications as described by California Co de of Regulations, title 2, section 172.
