00108238 - PSYCHIATRIC TECHNICIAN TRAINEE (SAFETY)
Incumbents assist licensed staff with custody tasks, which include: searching for drugs, contraband, and weapons; counting, distributing, and accounting for all utensils to prevent their use as weapons; inspecting forensic clients', patients', or inmates' mail and living areas for hazardous contraband; inspecting the facility to identify security breaches that could lead to forensic client, patient, or inmate escape; observing and intervening in forensic client, patient, or inmate behavior that may injure people, damage property, or signal an impending escape attempt; and escorting forensic clients, patients, or inmates to other areas of the facility.
Incumbents assist in carrying out activity and training programs for developmentally or mentally disordered offenders; help to create a safe and therapeutic environment for forensic clients, patients, or inmates; help to motivate forensic clients, patients, or inmates to develop self-reliance in daily living; assist in developing and encourage participation in on-the-unit group and individual activities for forensic clients, patients, or inmates; assist in occupational, recreational, vocational, and educational therapy programs for forensic clients, patients, or inmates; escort groups of forensic clients, patients, or inmates to and from activities on the hospital grounds; assist with forensic client, patient, or inmate feeding, habit training, and maintaining a well-groomed appearance; help keep forensic clients, patients, or inmates and their clothing, beds, and living areas clean; and attend unit and staff conferences to develop an understanding of and reasons for treatment being given.
Psychiatric Technician Trainees (Safety) also receive training in basic nursing care and treatment of developmentally and mentally disordered offenders consisting of classroom instruction and demonstration, residential unit nursing practice under supervision in designated units, and attendance at appropriate unit and staff conferences; assist the medical service personnel in the nursing care and treatment of forensic clients, patients, or inmates; perform a basic level of general behavioral and psychiatric nursing procedures under close supervision of qualified medical and nursing staff; and assist the nursing and medical personnel who are administering medications and treatments.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this class are filled by students enrolled in an accredited Psychiatric Technician training program. All appointments in this class are made on a limited-term basis and incumbents will not attain permanent status in this class. This class is distinguished from Psychiatric Technician Trainee by the custody requirements imposed by the criminal nature of the forensic client, patient, or inmate population and the security features of the facility.

An interest and willingness to work in developmental centers, State hospitals, or correctional facilities contracting with the Department of Mental Health for diagnostic and treatment services; willingness, as a trainee, to do routine or detailed work; emotional stability; patience; tolerance; tact; alertness; neat personal appearance; and hearing and vision required for successful job performance.
Special Physical Characteristics
Incumbents must possess and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during physically, mentally, and emotionally stressful and emergency situations encountered on the job without endangering their own health and well-being or that of their fellow employees, forensic clients, patients, inmates, or the public.
