Tasks:
1: Performing difficult professional work in connection with selecting, cataloging, loaning, and/or the reference use of books and other library materials.
2: Providing research materials (e.g. books, magazines, law library, etc.) to assist library patrons with case work/projects by performing professional library services (e.g., selecting and cataloging reading/research materials, interlibrary loan, circulation, etc.).
3: Developing effective relationships with library patrons to ensure good rapport and safety guidelines are maintained within the library.
4: Operating online programs such as Integrated Library System (ILS), Library World, Destiny, or Alexandria in place of card catalogs utilized to locate library materials.
5: Preparing library inventory (e.g. books, magazines, etc.) for circulation by cataloging materials according to current library classification systems (i.e. Dewey, Library of Congress, National Library of Medicine).
6: Promoting a working environment free of discrimination and sexual harassment to improve morale and safety.
7: Performing collection development on library inventory to ensure collection is relevant and current by cataloging and/or reviewing inventory details (e.g., condition, age, etc.).
8: Scanning, cataloging barcodes when checking out/loaning items (e.g., books, magazines, etc.).
9: Reminding library patrons to return borrowed or overdue library materials in a timely manner using email or telephone.
10: Evaluating materials, information, and/or research to identify if items are outdated or unused to determine if they should be discarded and/or replaced as appropriate.
11: Obtaining data/information for library patrons to complete their casework by performing internet and database searches as requested.
12: Maintaining current and relevant selections of library materials (e.g., books, magazines, newspapers, etc.) based on suggestions and/or requests from library patrons.
13: Performing the application of the basic philosophy, principles, and theories of library service.
14: Repairing/replacing books and/or other library materials as needed to maintain proper condition of library inventory.
Knowledge, Skill, or Ability:
1: Knowledge of professional library work to provide library services in a state mental health facility.
2: Knowledge of modern library methods, cataloging systems (e.g., Dewey Decimal System, Library of Congress) and terminology for efficient operation of library.
3: Knowledge of standard library reference materials to assist users with research.
4: Knowledge of quality assurance standards to maintain and update library services systems (e.g., cataloging, loaning).
5: Knowledge of computer software and databases used for research.
6: Knowledge of electronic database(s) to search for data by subject (e.g. author, book title, year, etc.).
7: Knowledge of computerized card catalog systems to locate reading materials.
8: Knowledge of facility safety policies to ensure library activities remain compliant.
9: Ability to apply professional knowledge to the practical problems of library services (e.g. missing inventory, damaged property, etc.) and how to resolve them.
10: Ability to analyze situations accurately and take effective action.
11: Ability to communicate effectively.
12: Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with library staff and other facility employees (including patient workers) to meet the department’s goals and objectives.
13: Ability in adapting to changes in priorities, work assignments, and other issues that may impact pre-established courses of action for completing assignments.
14: Ability to have an objective and empathetic understanding of people from different cultures, lifestyles and orientations.
15: Ability to actively support a safe and hazard free workplace through practice of personal safety and vigilance in the identification of safety or security hazards.
