Minimum Qualifications

All applicants must meet the education and/or experience requirements as stated on this exam bulletin to be accepted to the examination.

00101791 - ROUTE SALES REPRESENTATIVE

Possession of a valid driver’s license of the appropriate class issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Applicants who do not possess the license will be admitted to the examination but must secure the license prior to appointment.

Candidates who are within six months of satisfying the experience requirement will be admitted to the examination, but they must fully meet the experience requirement before being eligible for appointment.
Route Sales Representative

Two years of sales experience.

Academic education from an accredited college/university may be substituted for up to two years of the required general experience, on a year-for-year basis.

Felony Disqualification

Pursuant to Government Code section 8880.71, persons convicted of a felony or any gambling related offense are disqualified from employment with the California State Lottery and are, therefore, not eligible to be examined for, or be appointed to, positions in this class at the California State Lottery.

Background Investigation

Pursuant to Government Code section 8880.38, all persons selected by the California State Lottery shall be required to undergo a thorough background investigation prior to appointment.

Position Description

00101791 - ROUTE SALES REPRESENTATIVE

Under general direction, incumbents perform the in-store functions involved with selling products to the public through retail outlets within designated geographic areas of the State, service assigned accounts, and to do other related work.

This deep class includes ranges for the entry and journey level.

At the entry level (Range A), incumbents function in a training capacity while learning how to effectively distribute and place point-of-sale materials; monitor product inventory; collect and reconcile money; explain products, applicable equipment, and department-initiated promotions; and ensure product sales are conducted in a manner consistent with departmental policies.

At the journey level (Range B), incumbents will be expected to demonstrate a broader knowledge of the retail environment, merchandising strategies, and departmental policies.
Positions allocated to this class differ from those in the District Sales Representative (DSR) classification in that Route Sales Representatives (RSR) typically perform duties within narrower established limits, work within specific guidelines and procedures, and are more closely supervised.

Incumbents support the promotion, evaluation, review, and monitoring of product sales to specific retail outlets covered by a master agreement. Incumbents deliver and place point-of-sale (POS) materials as directed; monitor product inventory to recommend the best product mix for each location and order, deliver, and stock product inventories; maintain product stock; collect and reconcile money from vending machines; ensure monies are accurately recorded and agreed upon by retailer; resolve problems with retailers relating to equipment malfunctions and customer service issues; answer questions from consumers on use of equipment; ensure that all products are sold in a secure manner and in accordance with departmental policy; maintain regular contact with district office support staff; run electronic reports using on-site equipment and transmit to the department; explain products, applicable equipment, and department-initiated promotions to store personnel and customers; maintain vehicle records; maintain accurate electronic and/or hard copy records of retailer contacts/schedule visits; and gather initial information about suspected violations of State laws or department policies and forward to appropriate parties.

Ability to think critically and exercise good judgment. Possession of integrity, honesty, tolerance and tact, maturity and reliability; awareness and acceptance of the various racial, ethnic and cultural differences; willingness to travel and to perform work requiring irregular hours with advance notice. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to project a businesslike and professional image to effectively represent the department. Academic education from an accredited college/university in the field of business administration, marketing, or a closely related field.

In addition to evaluating the applicant's relative knowledge, skill and ability as demonstrated by quality and breadth of education/experience, emphasis in each test component will be on measuring competitively, relative to job demands, each applicant's:

  4. Safely operate a motor vehicle, keep logs, obtain routine maintenance/service, and report vehicle problems
  5. Deal with in-store situations/problems and take appropriate action
  6. Communicate effectively
  7. Physically restock and/or move equipment
  8. Collect and reconcile cash, demonstrating a good understanding of basic accounting principles
  9. Review sales data and take appropriate action such as adjusting product mix and recommend POS placement
  10. Set up and maintain POS material and merchandise as instructed
  11. Maintain accurate electronic and hardcopy records/logs relating to daily schedule and activity
  12. Learn department equipment operation
  13. Understand basic safety guidelines relating to the placement of equipment and POS material

Eligible List Information

A Servicewide Open eligible list for the ROUTE SALES REPRESENTATIVE Classification will be established for:

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 12 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Resulting Eligibility List(s) will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of California.

Your performance in the examination described in this bulletin will be rated against a predetermined job-related rating, and all applicants who pass will be ranked according to their scores.

General Qualifications: Applicants must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class. A medical examination may be required. In open examinations, investigation may be made of employment records and personal history and fingerprinting may be required.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists established by competitive examination, regardless of date, must be used in the following order: 1) sub-divisional promotional, 2) departmental promotional, 3) multi-departmental promotional, 4) service-wide promotional, 5) departmental open, 6) open. When there are two lists of the same kind, the older must be used first. Eligible lists will expire in one to four years unless otherwise stated on the bulletin.

High School Equivalence: Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways: 1) passing the General Education Development (GED) Test; 2) completion of 12 semester units of college-level work; 3) certification from the State Department of Education, a local school board, or high school authorities that the competitor is considered to have education equivalent to graduation from high school; or 4) for clerical and accounting classes, substitution of business college work in place of high school on a year-for-year basis.

Accepted applicants must provide proof of identification at each in-person test session. Acceptable identification consists of a photo identification card or two forms of signed identification.
