Job Description and Duties

The Monitoring and Laboratory Division (MLD) of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is seeking qualified applicants for a position in the area of ambient air monitoring quality assurance.  Under the general direction of the Manager of the Quality Assurance Section (QAS), the successful incumbent will conduct quality assurance activities to ensure that ambient air monitoring data collected throughout the California monitoring network complies with federal and State procedures and regulations; and perform laboratory evaluations of emerging sensor technologies designed for ambient air monitoring at or near sensitive receptor locations and in disadvantaged communities.  MLD's QAS fulfills this role by performing certification services on compressed gas cylinders and transfer standards utilized for conducting calibrations and quality assurance checks on the ambient air monitoring instruments; operating, monitoring, and maintaining an environmental test chamber and associated equipment; collecting and evaluating data, performing analysis and generating results of performance evaluation for monitoring instruments; maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing analytical and calibration systems; identifying and resolving problems; and assisting with other special event monitoring activities as necessary.   This serves as an important element of CARB's commitment to produce accurate, timely, and relevant ambient air quality data for public awareness, regulatory purposes, and research studies.

This position will require the employee to pass a pre-placement physical examination as condition of employment.  This position also requires the employee to possess a valid California driver's license and to pass training courses (including periodic refresher courses) in first-aid/CPR and defensive driver training.  Commitment to travel year round for extended periods and to all areas of the state (urban, rural, and remote) may be necessary.

The QAS is located in the MLD facility at 13th and T Streets in Sacramento (close to downtown and light rail).  This is an exciting opportunity for a driven, energetic, and qualified professional who is looking to be part of the Quality Assurance Team and contribute to the future of CARB's Quality Assurance Program.
