Job Description and Duties

This is an intermittent position that can work up to 1500 hours per calendar year.

The Meteorology Section of the Air Quality Planning and Science Division (AQPSD) is responsible for providing forecasting services in support of the State's agricultural and prescribed burning control program as required by Title 17 and the State's emergency episode plan 365 days a year.  The Section provides microscale to statewide air quality modeling in support of various CARB programs, such as the air toxics hot spots program, community air protection (AB617), emergency responses, State Implementation Plans, and others.  The Section develops and maintains a web-based interactive reporting tool for prescribed burns and a comprehensive, statewide meteorological database.  In addition, the Section conducts microscale to meso-scale meteorological modeling in support of various CARB program development needs.

 

Under close supervision of the Section Manager, this position will: assist in the development of a surface and upper air data access platform; develop visualized plotting tools for surface and aloft meteorological parameters; calculate derived meteorological parameters such as stability, mixing height, inversion height, transport wind, and ventilation index; assist in assessing model performance for the Bluesky modeling framework by comparing predicted particulate matter concentrations (BlueSky modeling outputs) with prescribed fire monitoring data (where available) with a goal to optimize BlueSky model parameters; assist in air quality and toxics modeling in support of CARB’s regulatory development, AB617, special studies, EJ, and others; conduct statistical analysis of burn day decisions for agricultural and prescribed burning; and assist in the development of reports and presentations summarizing air quality modeling results, agricultural burning, prescribed burning and meteorological data.

Working Conditions

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) office is located in the beautiful CalEPA building in downtown Sacramento.

The successful candidate for this position will be enthusiastic and demonstrate initiative, have excellent written and oral communication skills, have strong analytical and problem solving skills, have a strong understanding of meteorological parameters, and have the ability to work effectively with other staff.  The candidate must be self-motivated, dependable and able to work independently.  Computer programming and Linux environment experience is desirable.
