Job Description and Duties

These Heavy Truck Driver positions are "Permanent/Intermittent" positions.
These positions may work up to a maximum of 1,500 hours per calendar year.

Duties for this position include but are not limited to, operating heavy motor trucks and trailer, over the road for emissions testing, transport of goods, vehicle pick-up or delivery or other driving duties as required.  Vehicle type includes, but not limited to, truck, tractor trucks and trailer combination vehicles, buses, and light duty passenger cars. Operate test vehicles on chassis dynamometer.  Assisting with Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS) testing and mounting of instruments on various types of vehicles.  Ensuring that test equipment does not interfere with vehicle driving operation, following requested steps associated with PEMS testing, and monitoring and reporting vehicle status during testing. Assisting with the mounting of a vehicle on the chassis dynamometer, driving a test vehicle on the chassis under various conditions, and assisting with the removal of vehicles from the chassis dynamometer. Monitor, track, schedule, and carry out care and servicing of equipment and vehicles assigned to the section.  This includes routine vehicle preventative maintenance, cleaning, safety inspections, emissions inspections, vehicle refueling and other fluid checks. Specifically, driver’s logs, vehicle safety inspections, preventative maintenance: tire repair, tire replacements, oil changes, smog checks, opacity checks, and vehicle cleaning.  Driving may be required for vehicle delivery and pick up at repair facilities and for test drives of repaired vehicles.

Other duties include, maintaining a Class A commercial driver’s license and associated requirements.

This includes annual medical evaluations, license renewals, random drug tests, and vehicle operator training

Some travel to Sacramento might be required for training purposes.

Working Conditions

CARB will relocate our El Monte facility to Riverside (within the 92507 zip code). The relocation is scheduled to occur in 2021.

If you are new to CA state employment, you must have taken and passed the Heavy Truck Driver (HTD) examination in order to be eligible for the classification.  Please go to California Department of Education's (CDE) web site and follow their instructions for taking the Training & Experience (T&E) examination, hyperlink is below:

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Candidate must have a Class A driver’s license and awareness of all safety requirements related to driving a heavy-duty truck. The candidate must also maintain their Class A license, conduct medical evaluation, and attend training. Being technically inclined is preferred since some of the duties include conducting vehicle maintenance. Candidate must be organized and must have good communication skills. Finally, the candidate must be able to work well with a team.
