Job Description and Duties

CalPERS is the nation’s largest public pension fund with equity and income investments in both domestic and international markets through both private and public investment vehicles. The Investment Office (INVO) is responsible for investment and daily management of CalPERS assets. INVO invests in stocks, bonds, real estate, private debt, and private equity, utilizing a wide array of instruments and vehicles to generate the best total returns on a long-term basis at an acceptable level of risk.

The Sustainable Investments (SI) Program is responsible for developing and implementing the CalPERS Sustainable Investments strategy and thought leadership for the Total Fund. The SI program focuses on sustainability-related advocacy and policy, integration, communication, and investment. The SI program works closely with each asset class to manage investment risks and uncover investment opportunities through the sustainable investment lens, while ensuring that Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors are integrated into investment strategy, analysis, and decisions. All of this is done with the goal of enhancing the long-term sustainability and resiliency of the Total Fund.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Support the Investment Manager in developing and deploying a SI portfolio.
  • Responsible for research and analytics on sustainability themed investment strategies, including climate-related investment opportunities. 
Telework Information: This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with up to two days of remote work and three days or more onsite, per week.

The annual incentive opportunity is 0-10% of salary and is based on the level of achievement against several quantitative and qualitative measures. Permanent full-time employees who possess certification as a CFA may receive a 5% monthly base pay differential.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Prior professional investment experience
  • MBA or undergraduate degree or in business, finance, or another applicable technical field
  • Professional certification such as a CFA, CPA, CAIA, and / or a CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing
  • Familiarity with investment opportunities that will come about from a global transition to a low carbon economy.
  • Portfolio management experience
  • Knowledge and interest in sustainability and ESG
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to details
  • Ability to work independently and in groups
  • Computer data mining abilities
  • MS Suite experience
  • Experience with creation and manipulation of financial models
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
