Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Information Technology Manager I, the incumbent acts as a virtualization and storage engineer, performing advanced administration, configuration, deployments, and support of a VMware virtualization infrastructure and related hardware/software. The incumbent provides configuration and management of centralized enterprise grade storage arrays. The incumbent will provision storage by zoning and masking centralized storage to Windows/Linux/ESXi hosts using SAN management tools. The incumbent will be responsible for creating and maintaining the virtual server backup technology to protect the virtual server infrastructure.  The incumbent is responsible for assessing customer technical solutions to ensure that they adhere to the technical infrastructure and are in alignment with the Legislative Data Center’s (LDC) Enterprise Architecture to address the support, reliability, and performance aspects of infrastructure systems. The incumbent will provide support for systems within the team with a desire to learn and develop IT skills and knowledge base on the California Legislative process and business. The incumbent will work on keeping the systems under their support patched and secure while always keeping up to date on emerging technology with the ability to engineer IT solutions for the future. This role requires constant communication, both verbal and written, with team members throughout the organization. The ideal individual will be one that strives for excellence in both IT and customer/client satisfaction. The incumbent will act as a team contributor on projects involving complex architectures and system configurations with the ability to prioritize projects and develop solutions while adhering to overall information technology standards. Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently, and to prioritize and manage work to meet critical timelines in a fast-paced environment.

Department Information

The Office of Legislative Counsel (OLC) is a small civil service department whose mission is to provide responsive nonpartisan and confidential legal services and information technology support services to the California State Legislature and in support of the legislative process.  This position is located in the heart of downtown Sacramento. Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Five (5) years of experience in engineering, designing, configuring, securing, and managing components in a VMware virtual server-based infrastructure such as VMware vSphere vCenter Server, templates, distributed switches, and NSX. Experience designing virtualization replication technologies to improve disaster recovery processes to utilize virtualization benefits. Advanced knowledge of management and configuration of enterprise storage arrays such as Dell PowerMax or XtremIO. Ability to provision storage using Brocade SAN Nav tools. Experience using SMB/CIFS/NFS protocols with Dell Isilon storage for windows and UNIX servers. Experience with Enterprise Backup software such as Dell Avamar/Data Domain. Experience with HP Blade server infrastructure and HP OneView management tools. Knowledge of Microsoft Windows server administration technologies. Knowledge of project management practices. Ability to act as a team contributor on projects involving complex architectures and system configurations. Ability to prioritize projects and develop solutions while adhering to overall information technology standards. Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently, and to prioritize and manage work to meet critical timelines in a fast-paced environment. Your Expertise

Your Responsibilities

  • Administer VMware-based virtualization infrastructure covering vCenter ESXi environments
  • Design, plan, implement, and administer HP enterprise blade server and storage technologies in support of underlying virtualization infrastructure
  • Perform backups, troubleshoot, and provide problem resolution for servers associated with a VMware virtual infrastructure
  • Build highly available server clusters in a vSphere environment and monitor and troubleshoot system performance
  • Create and maintain VM templates used for rapid deployment of virtual machines
  • Ensure the security posture for the virtualization environment by monitoring system security, documenting system configurations, and ensuring compliance with industry best practices
  • Provide mission critical support for infrastructure systems hardware and software related to the Legislative Enterprise Infrastructure through analysis, monitoring, diagnosing, and correcting systems infrastructure problems; oversee and implement of upgrades, expansions, and enhancements; design and implement changes to the existing systems environment; and perform problem resolution for complex systems
  • Perform information systems resource and capacity planning and support to ensure optimum infrastructure availability and future growth
  • Perform configuration management on complex systems hardware and software resources to ensure a reliable, secure, and stable systems infrastructure, and create, update, and modify any documentation that depicts the physical and logical designs of the information systems infrastructure
  • Evaluate hardware and software, including development tools, through the use of analysis methods to produce documented alternatives and a recommendation for the purpose of obtaining, replacing, or upgrading existing hardware and software
  • Evaluate and support complex of infrastructure systems hardware and software which is mission critical for the legislative information systems infrastructure through analysis, monitoring, diagnosing, and solving the complex systems problems, and implement upgrades, expansion, and enhancements to the existing systems environment  
  • Be available nights and weekends to address and facilitate the resolution to urgent systems-related issues
