Job Description and Duties

The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is recruiting to fill a Supervising Special Investigator II (Commander) position within the Office of Protective Services (OPS), located in Cathedral City, CA.

 

Under the direction of the Chief, and the Southern Regional Commander of the OPS, the Commander oversees the daily operation and supervision of the protective services division at the designated Developmental Center and/or Community Facility (DC/CF).  

 

The Commander oversees all OPS employee functions and may be required to perform and/or participate in complex investigations and sensitive staff functions related to field investigations and public safety while establishing a strong liaison with DC/CF management. Ensures all consumer-related protection issues are identified and managed accordingly, provides technical assistance and consultation with the Quality Assurance Departments and Internal Audits function.

Department Information

The California Department of Developmental Services is the agency through which the State of California provides services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities.

 

These disabilities include intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism and related conditions. Services are provided through state-operated developmental centers and community facilities, and contracts with 21 nonprofit regional centers. The regional centers serve as a local resource to help find and access the services and supports available to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a Background Investigation be cleared prior to being hired.
  • The position(s) require(s) Medical Clearance prior to being hired.
  • The position(s) require(s) Psychological Evaluation clearance prior to being hired.

The Office of Protective Services is a Law Enforcement Agency.  After the background check clears, the applicant will be appointed to the position. This background check includes interviews of employment and personal references; and FBI, California DOJ fingerprint clearances and DMV clearance(s). The selected applicant must complete a notarized waiver for access to their personal records.

 

Completion of the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Basic Academy or Specialized Investigators Basic Course is required (Please attach certificate to application). And current California driver’s licenses are required. This is a sworn Peace Officer position pursuant to California Penal Code section 830.3(v). The successful candidate will undergo a complete background investigation, in accordance with the Commission on POST requirements. All appointments are subject to pre-employment physical and fingerprint clearance.

  • Skill in planning, organizing, and directing investigation staff
  • Ability to analyze, think and act quickly in emergencies and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Ability to interpret and apply the provisions of laws and rules to specific cases, and prepare appropriate statewide management statistical reports for the agency.
  • Knowledge of various types of developmental disabilities and have knowledge of specific commitments that allow admission to the Developmental Centers/Community Facility.
