Job Description and Duties

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by conducting the more difficult and highly specialized epidemiological investigations and disease surveillance in the assigned area; plan, organize, and carry out original scientific research on vector-borne diseases; maintain contact with managers and scientific staff of vector control agencies, Health Officers, and Directors of environmental health programs; and provide training and related activities.

 

Conduct surveillance of vector-borne diseases, including plague, hantavirus, and mosquito and tick-borne diseases, in a designated region of responsibility and elsewhere in the state as required. Surveillance is conducted to assess and mitigate risk of vector-borne disease transmission, and to investigate vector-borne cases or outbreaks.

 

Act as a lead biologist and provide consultation, training, and educational materials on vector-borne disease prevention, surveillance and control to local, state, and federal governmental agencies, the medical community, and the general public.

 

Plan, organize, and carry-out research projects related to the prevention, epidemiology, surveillance, and control of vector-borne diseases; adapt research methods as needed to ensure project success.

The CDPH Infectious Diseases Branch (IDB) conducts surveillance, investigations, control and prevention of many important infectious diseases in California, including botulism, coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever), foodborne, waterborne, vector-borne, zoonotic, and emerging infectious diseases. IDB activities are in four Sections:
  • Disease Investigations Section 
  • Vector-Borne Disease Section 
  • Veterinary Public Health Section 
  • Surveillance and Statistics Section
