Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of the Program Representative (PR) III (Supervisor), the Program Representative I, performs the full range of duties enforcing the laws and regulations of the Automotive Repair Act and the Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance Program. The PR I is a member of the Audits and Inspections Branch and is responsible for conducting facility audit and inspection activities. The PR I will be required to travel with overnight stays throughout California.

Working Conditions

The incumbent works 40 hours a week in a field environment primarily performing Automotive Repair Dealer and Smog Check station inspections. Daily access to and use of a personal computer and telephone is essential. Sitting and standing requirements in the field are consistent with office work. In addition, the incumbent will spend approximately 85% of time per week in the field, which includes standing, sitting/driving, and walking. Driving is an essential function of this position. The incumbent is required to travel throughout an assigned geographical area by various methods of transportation.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge of equipment and methods used in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment and methods used in smog inspections.
  • Possess a current Smog Inspector License.
  • Ability to operate tools used in automotive repair, inspect automotive equipment, purchase parts and materials, keep accurate records of inventory, reconcile and make reports, follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others, work efficiently, report to work on time, maintain consistent, regular attendance, work under changing priorities or deadlines, look and act in a professional manner, and exhibit courteous behavior towards coworkers.

The Audits and Inspections Branch offers an Alternate Work Week Schedule (AWWS).  New to State employees are not eligible to immediately participate in an AWWS upon appointment and will be placed in standard work schedule (8 hours/day Monday – Friday) until AWWS eligibilities are met.
