Unlicensed Psychologists earn up to $10,373/month
Licensed Psychologists earn up to $12,571/month

- $500 a month clinical supervision pay differential -

The Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero (DSH-A) has some excellent job opportunities for psychologists, including early career psychologists coming off internship. DSH-A is a 1200 bed state hospital serving men under a variety of criminal and civil commitments. DSH-A hires pre-licensed and licensed psychologists with an excellent salary and benefits package. Our department offers a myriad of individual and group supervision opportunities ensuring pre-licensed psychologists accrue all of the hours needed for licensure. DSH-A’s patient population provides psychologists with exceptional experience in inpatient treatment and assessment, as well as interdisciplinary teamwork. We provide training in working with Incompetent to Stand Trial, Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity, Offenders with Mental Health Disorders, and Mentally Ill Inmate populations. We offer training on evidence based assessment tools such as the START, HCR-20v3, PCL-R, and the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale. Our APA-accredited doctoral internship provides opportunities to supervise psychology interns.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
The Psychologist will be directed by the Chief Psychologist and/or Senior Psychologist Supervisor in Psychology Services at the Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

• Completing an Admission Psychological Assessment (APA) to further delineate and clarify psychiatric and psychological diagnoses
• Conducting intellectual and cognitive assessments of all patients when clinically indicated
• Conducting psychological assessments
• Responsible for creating and monitoring behavioral interventions
• Providing timely feedback to the patient, the results of psychological assessments and evaluations and complete appropriate documentation of this interaction
• Delivering treatment services
• Performing treatment team duties
• If qualified, licensed psychologists provide clinical supervision to pre-doctoral interns and unlicensed professionals as requested by the Chief Psychologist

In order to be considered for this job vacancy, you must satisfy one of the following requirements:
1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at Psychologist Exam Bulletin, OR
2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: License: Possession of a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the California Board of Psychology and possession of an earned Doctorate Degree in Psychology from an educational institution meeting the criteria of Section 2914 of the Medical Board of California's Business and Professions Code. AND Possession of the education and experience for the appropriate specialty (Clinical, Counseling, Educational, Experimental, or Social) as outlined in Section 1396 of the Board of Psychology's Regulations. Individuals who do not qualify for licensure by the California Board of Psychology or who are in the process of securing this license will be admitted into the examination and may be appointed, but must secure a valid license within three years of an appointment or the employment shall be terminated. For persons employed less than full time, an extension of a waiver of licensure may be granted for additional years proportional to the extent of part-time employment, as long as the person is employed without interruption in service, but in no case shall the waiver exceed five years. (Unlicensed individuals who are recruited from outside the State of California and who qualify for licensure may take the examination and may be appointed for a maximum of two years at which time licensure shall have been obtained or the employment shall be terminated. Additionally, they must take the licensure examination at the earliest possible date after the date of employment.) Education: Completion of all requirements for a Doctoral Degree in Psychology from a recognized college or university with specialization in clinical or child clinical psychology. [Graduates of foreign universities, except Canadian, and graduates of unaccredited universities must meet the educational requirements for State licensure as a Psychologist as evidenced by a written statement from the California Board of Psychology and possession of an earned Doctorate Degree in Psychology from an educational institution meeting the criteria of Section 2914 of the Medical Board of California's Business and Professions Code. This statement will also be required to determine the sufficiency of an academic specialty believed equivalent to those mentioned here. (Applicants who are within six months of receiving their degree will be admitted to the examination but will not be eligible for appointment until receipt of the degree and completion of the internship.)]
