Job Description and Duties

FORESTRY AIDE (SEASONAL) – SIERRA DISTRICT / SIERRA GOLD SECTOR

 

Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKs program. Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKs recipient in the comments area on the application. Applicants must submit a verification of their CalWORKs eligibility status, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing TANF eligibility or a copy of your last aid check stub. If verification is not submitted with the application, the application will not be processed. (Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program).


The Forestry Aide reporting location is at Empire Mine State Historic Park in Grass Valley, CA. This position will work under the direction of the Sierra Gold Sector Environmental Scientist.

 

This position will work for a maximum of 1500 hours per calendar year or 189 days. The Forestry Aide will assist in invasive plant control, native plant restoration, natural resource surveys and project activities at Empire Mine State Historic Park, Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park, and the South Yuba River State Park.  Occasional work throughout the Sierra District at other parks may be required.  Additional duties include assisting visitor services, GIS mapping, trail and resource management inspections, and office work including creating reports, maps, and entering information into databases.  Experience in botany, landscape maintenance, weed-abatement, forestry, and knowledge of California native plants and exotic plants is desired.  

 

The Forestry Aide will participate in extensive field work in steep river canyons and in thick brush including poison oak during all types of weather including 100+ degree days.  The employee must be physically fit and able to walk 5-10 miles a day and be able to operate four-wheel drive vehicles. Work schedule is either Monday – Friday 8am-4:30pm or Monday-Thursday 7am-5:30pm.  Occasional weekend and holiday work may be required.  

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

 


Per California Code of Regulations (CCR) 599.961, this is a sensitive position, and therefore subject to drug and alcohol testing. It should be noted that testing is not mandatory, but is allowed to be conducted only if and when there is a determination of reasonable suspicion as defined in CCR 599.962.

Statement of Qualifications

Applicants must submit a one-page Statement of Qualifications answering three questions: Why do you want to work for State Parks?  What is your academic and/or professional experience in botany and invasive plant control?  What is your level of experience using weed-eaters?
