Job Description and Duties

Interested in joining a multidisciplinary group of staff and stakeholders making a real impact for wildlife? Would you like to drive applied research used to understand elk and pronghorn populations and their habitats around the state? Looking for achieving real results on the ground while developing policy? - then this may the job for you?

1. Collaborate with passionate regional staff to implement elk and pronghorn monitoring solutions.

2. Perform high quality applied research to understand populations and wildlife behaviour.

3. Administer a statewide elk and pronghorn program.

4. Work with Native American Tribes and stakeholders to e.g. facilitate hunting opportunities.


In order to be eligible for this position, you must either be transfer eligible or take and pass the following exam:

Working Conditions

Should be able to work long hours in the office using a personal computer and keyboard at least several hours a day, sitting most of the time but may involve standing or sitting for brief periods. Field work may be done in uneven terrain and involve hiking for extended periods and carrying a 30-pound backpack. Aerial surveys from a small, fixed wing aircraft or helicopter will be done occasionally. Possession of a valid driver’s license. Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle and equipment and be prepared to travel moderately using a state vehicle. This position is eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the Branch.

Special Requirements

The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). Please ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions. Willingness to work irregular hours including weekends and holidays and to travel in performing field work throughout the State as needed. Must be able to work in remote conditions and elevate up to 30 pounds repeatedly throughout the day and hike long distances

Desirable Qualifications

Possession of a PhD or Master's degree in wildlife ecology, wildlife conservation, or a closely related field with experience administering complex environmental projects.
