Job Description and Duties

Are you an archaeologist looking to work full time on a variety of projects throughout California? DWR has the perfect opportunity for you, based in West Sacramento in a hybrid work environment (fieldwork, office and telework) with free parking and a flexible schedule. Under the direction of the Cultural and Historic Resources Unit Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for cultural resources support services for the Department and especially the continued operation and maintenance of the State Water Project (SWP), including planning and conducting archaeological field surveys and assisting with natural resources surveys. Duties also include working closely with Tribes, federal partners, and other State agencies; and preparation of documentation for California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and other State and federal environmental regulations.

Department of Water Resources (DWR) was established in 1956 by the California State Legislature.  We manage California’s water resources, systems, and infrastructure, including the State Water Project, in a responsible sustainable way.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid California Driver’s License is required to travel to various job sites, including SWP facilities and other locations throughout the State, and to attend meetings and conferences.

 

The incumbent must be able to meet the demands of field work on land and in water; must be able to swim at least 50 yards and stay afloat at least 10 minutes; must be able to move equipment or objects weighing up to 40 pounds over rugged terrain.

 

This position is based in West Sacramento in a hybrid work environment (office and telework) with free parking and a flexible schedule.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:


Familiarity with environmental compliance laws including CEQA, National 
Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the National Historic Preservation Act, AB 52, and experience working with Native Americans.  Also have knowledge of California history and prehistory, experience in archaeological survey and excavation; project management skills, a desire to learn and utilize GIS tools; strong verbal and written communication skills, and strong analytical and computer skills.  Ideal candidates will possess the ability to be flexible, work well under deadlines and time constraints, and work effectively and cooperatively with other DWR staff, government agencies and public and private entities.
