Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Investment Director (ID), the Investment Manager (IM) will drive the further integration of ESG factors in CalPERS’ investment processes by leading the development and deployment of analytics supporting portfolio risk management and security selection, in collaboration with CalPERS’ public markets investment teams. The IM will also play a leading role in sourcing, performing due diligence, and monitoring the climate-aware investing universe of index providers and active managers.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the development and integration of sustainability insights to enhance portfolio risk-adjusted performance.
  • Create dashboards to monitor ESG risk factors and support climate solution investments.
  • Source and evaluate sustainable investment platforms in partnership with global equity and fixed-income investment teams.
  • Build industry relationships to stay updated on sustainability trends and promote CalPERS as a world-class climate-aware investor

Telework Information: This position is eligible for hybrid work schedule, with up to two days of remote work and three days or more onsite, per week.

This position is eligible for annual and long-term incentive awards. The annual incentive opportunity is 0-75% of salary and is based on the level of achievement against several quantitative and qualitative measures. The long-term incentive program provides an additional opportunity of 50-75% of base salary beginning after five years and when absolute total fund returns meet or exceed board-approved thresholds.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • 7+ years of investment experience in research or portfolio management roles in public markets, with a focus on sustainability factors.
  • Strong knowledge of the sustainability industry, including major frameworks and experience with ESG/Climate analytics providers.
  • Hands-on experience developing analytical platforms, integrating large datasets, and using modern data science, statistical modeling, and visualization tools.
  • CFA Charterholder and/or CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing credentials.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to translate complex data into meaningful insights.
  • Strong communication skills for effectively presenting findings and recommendations to diverse stakeholders.
