Job Description and Duties

This position offers an exciting and rewarding opportunity to be part of a team of professional scientists in the Aquatic Ecology Unit (AEU) and the Interagency Ecological Program (IEP). AEU conducts field studies related to fisheries and general aquatic ecology in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Under supervision of a lead person, the incumbent is responsible for collecting fisheries, invertebrate, and water quality data associated with monitoring and applied research projects in the Yolo Bypass and Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The incumbent will also correctly identify and monitor native and non-native fish populations using a variety of fisheries techniques, including use of a rotary screw trap, fyke trap, and beach seine. Other duties include but are not limited to: processing water and biological samples in the laboratory, assistance with the management and summary of field monitoring data in databases, maintenance of field equipment, and the preparation of draft technical reports. Field duties require rigorous physical work under variable conditions.

Special Requirements


Field sampling may require traversing uneven terrain and boat activities in rugged outdoor environments and in inclement weather.  
Field sampling may occur on weekends and at night.  Must possess a valid California driver's license.

Must be able to meet the demands of field sampling in terrestrial and aquatic habitats, including: swim at least 50 yards and stay afloat at least 10 minutes, work on boats without severe incapacitation due to seasickness, and transport equipment or objects weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance. Weekend, night, irregular, holiday, and extended work hours may be required during study implementation periods.

Completed at least two years of college with 10 semester units or more in the sciences (e.g., biology, ecology, chemistry, geology, or related fields).

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Experience in fisheries biology, water quality, limnology, or marine biology. Experience with taxonomic identification of organisms as well as fish and aquatic invertebrate field sampling techniques. Proficiency with standard word processing and data management software. Good communication skills and safety awareness are essential.
