Job Description and Duties

Position is for a 10 month school year with eligibility for an additional 2 months to be paid by State Special School Benefits through Unemployment Insurance.

Under direction and supervision of the Supervising Cook I, Cook Specialist I performs duties of a cook in quantity cooking of side dishes (vegetables & starches), preparing cold salads & fruits for breakfast, lunch, dinner meals (including special diets) for the students of California School for the Deaf (CSDR). Follows standardized recipes, menu, menu production sheets & HACCP principles in food preparation process and maintenance of clean, safe and sanitation of culinary equipment, cooking utensils and work areas to meet the regulations and guidelines of the National School Meal Programs and foodservice related state and local rules.

This is a limited term position with the possibility of becoming permanent.

Working Conditions

Subject to fingerprinting and criminal record clearance by the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation and Tuberculosis clearance. This position is designated as safety sensitive and is subject to reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing.

**EXAMINATION**

Individuals who do not have lateral transfer eligibility, must have taken and passed an examination to obtain list eligibility for the classification in order to apply.  List eligibility may be obtained by meeting the minimum qualifications as outlined in the examination bulletin, and obtaining a passing score on the Qualifications Assessment Questionnaire.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Experience in quantity cooking and dispensing 400 or more meals in a large commercial/school foodservice environment. Good planning, organization & records documentation skills. Be able to work independently and as a team member. Practice punctuality, good attendance and follow good personal hygiene practices, knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) or willingness to learn.
