Job Description and Duties

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Northern Region office in Redding is hiring an Environmental Scientist to lead our field efforts of the Heritage and Wild Trout Program.

The Environmental Scientist will take a lead role in planning, organizing and carrying out biological investigations focused on protecting and enhancing California’s heritage and wild trout resources, while providing opportunities for high-quality wild trout angling within the Northern Region’s nine counties. Field sites include world class fisheries such a Eagle Lake, the McCloud River, Upper Sacramento River, Hat Creek, Fall River, and more, with opportunities to explore and development Northern California's many other wild trout fishing opportunities. These investigations will include fish species composition studies, fish population estimates, fish health assessments, habitat typing and other studies which contribute to the knowledge of special trout populations found within the region. Other duties will include evaluating and recommending angling regulations, leading creel surveys, data entry, analysis and reporting, reviewing and commenting on land and water projects potentially impacting heritage and/or wild trout populations, collaborating with various agencies, high profile constituency groups and interested parties to develop and implement habitat improvement projects that benefit heritage and wild trout.

This position is located in the Northern Region Redding Office within the Inland Fisheries and Wild Trout Program, a diverse team of hardworking and dedicated scientific staff. We seek an individual who shares enthusiasm for maximizing fisheries conservation and angler opportunity.

Working Conditions

The position requires the use of a computer and Microsoft Office software up to eight hours each day, the completion of office tasks that require sitting, standing, and walking to other locations; attendance at meetings and participation in conference or video calls. The position may require travel throughout the State including overnight travel for multiple days at a time. Early mornings, late nights, hiking long distances over uneven and possibly steep or wet terrain, use of 4-wheel drive vehicle (including all-terrain vehicle), and work in inclement weather are required. This position may include operation of, or being passenger on, a boat. A valid Driver’s License is required to operate a State vehicle. Wear a prescribed uniform when engaging with the public, conducting field work, and during site visits.
