This position is advertised by the California Science Center on behalf of the Office of Exposition Park Management; two distinct State Departments.

Exposition Park seeks a Director of External Affairs who can effectively manage stakeholder engagement, community and public relations, and ensure the successful execution of our organizational goals and vision. Both collaborative and communicative, the DEA serves as lead in developing new partnership strategies and opportunities consistent with OEPM’s mission and vision.


Job Description:
Developing new strategies and opportunities consistent with OEPMs mission and vision, the DEA will plan, organize, and implement external affairs and communications strategies in collaboration with departmental leadership. As a representative and advocate of OEPM and Exposition Park, the DEA will promote organizational visibility, serving as a key contact and supportive spokesperson for policy issues while also representing OEPM to the public, and community, external and internal stakeholders and leaders.

The DEA will engage with local and regional entities, implement dynamic community programs, devise strategies to attract new visitors and partners, and employ evaluative methods to measure success.

The DEA is responsible for the building, fostering, and expanding community partnerships with Exposition Park via collaboration with local community organizations, corporate sponsors and private and governmental partners. The DEA is also responsible for the design and implementation of community engagement initiatives and programs for Exposition Park.

The DEA will support external and internal communications including public relations, internal and external Park newsletters and public, promotional materials. The DEA will be responsible for event and program management, as well as the tracking, evaluation and associated impact reports. As an OEPM mission administrator, the DEA will ensure their departmental compliance with executive/governmental orders, laws, regulations and agreements.

Success in this position is consistent with effectively fostering the interests of Exposition Park with external and internal partners and advancing the mission, goals and strategic planning of OEPM. The DEA will manage the maintenance of external and internal park relationships and a commitment to procuring DEI through OEPM external affairs.

Department Information

The Office of Exposition Park Management (OEPM) is a state department within the California Natural Resources Agency, under the direction of a General Manager, appointed by the Governor. Exposition Park is a 160-acre state property in the heart of Los Angeles, south of downtown. The Park serves millions of visitors annually and is home to a collection of world-class museums, educational and sport facilities, and entertainment venues and open space publicly accessible to over half a million individuals who live within a three-mile radius, and to the millions of residents in the greater Los Angeles area.

The Office of Exposition Park Management's (OEPM) Mission is to provide long-term executive leadership in the development and implementation of park usage policy and day-to-day management, operation, and promotion of Exposition Park for its tenants and the public. In addition to their park-wide supervisory and administrative role, OEPM is supported by three branches: Department of Public Safety; Business and Public Affairs; and Administration and Operations, including fiscal operations.

Special Requirements

Desirable Qualifications

Master's Degree preferred or Bachelor's degree in Policy, Communications, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum 7 years experience in policy, public, community or philanthropic relations, stakeholder management, or government.
  • Knowledge of the organization and functions of the California State Government, including the organization and practices of the Legislature and the Executive Branch, principles, practices, and trends of public administration.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal laws and legislative processes.
  • Knowledge of public policy issues as they relate to sustainability, open spaces and equity.

  • Outstanding written, memo writing, and verbal communication skills, and strong interpersonal, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong leadership and team-building abilities.
  • Management experience with staff and/or consultants.
  • Skilled in strategic planning, project management, and organization.
  • Ability to serve as a key spokesperson for policy issues.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database management.
  • Skill in analyzing data and information from diverse sources.
  • A passion for the work of Exposition Park with a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with a high sense of urgency.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Preferred bi-lingual Spanish speaker.
