Works under the general direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor, Manager, Investigation Unit, Exposure Investigations Section, within the Environmental Health Investigations Branch. The Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) serves on a multidisciplinary team developing capacity to respond to illness and injury outbreaks that are not associated with infectious diseases but include toxicological outbreaks.
The incumbent provides guidance and consultation to multidisciplinary and local jurisdictions on toxicological exposure issues during non-infectious toxicological outbreaks. The Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) provides expertise in the development of a comprehensive plan to identify and respond to toxicological outbreaks in California.
The Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) maintains awareness of toxicological literature and develops reference materials for outbreak investigations. The incumbent collaborates with CDPH laboratory scientists and integrates epidemiology and laboratory data.
The Staff Toxicologist develops, and reviews reports and outreach materials relating to outbreak investigations.
The incumbent participates in a community of practice with interdepartmental programs, local health departments, California Environmental Protection Agency, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and academic partners who would potentially be involved in identifying and responding to non-infectious disease outbreaks. The Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) provides as-needed technical expertise responding to emergency scenario and emergency preparedness activities and serves as a subject matter expert for CDPH.
Telework Information
This position may be eligible for telework up to three (3) days per week and is required to report in-person to the designated headquarters office location a minimum of two (2) days per week. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH’s Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.
Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquarters office subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
