Job Description and Duties

Anticipated Interview Dates: We anticipate holding in-person interviews beginning October 7, 2024.

Telework Information: This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with up to two days of remote work and three days or more onsite, per week.

Our Information Technology Services Branch/Technology Infrastructure Services Division/Enterprise Network team is currently seeking an Information Technology Specialist III (ITS III) to serve as the Principal Network Engineer. This role will focus on data centers, campus networks, WAN, and cloud network automation, with responsibility for designing and managing the implementation of critical network solutions to modernize CalPERS' network infrastructure.

This position will run until filled with the following cutoff date for review: 9/17/24, 10/1/24, 10/15/24, and every two weeks until filled.

Working Conditions

  • This position does require occasional after-hours support, either remotely if applicable or on-site if necessary, for any planned exercises, updates/patching, maintenance activities, or critical incident resolution.
  • The ITS III is required to carry a smartphone and respond to incidents after business hours, on weekends and State Holidays.

Statement of Qualifications

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Networking certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Professional/Expert (CCNP/CCIE) and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
  • Extensive experience in Network Design and Implementation including LAN, WAN, data centers, and cloud environments.
  • Knowledge of network security principles, including firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and experience with secure network design and risk assessment.
  • Expertise in emerging technologies including familiarity with software-defined networking (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV), cloud networking, and other emerging technologies that drive modern network architectures.
  • Understanding of cloud networking architectures, including hybrid and multi-cloud environments, with experience in designing and managing networks using platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
