Job Description and Duties

You can have an impact by working collaboratively to help fulfill the Department of Fish and Wildlife's mission. The Department of Fish and Wildlife's South Coast Region is seeking a motivated individual to work out of the Seal Beach Office.

The incumbent will be responsible for wild trout monitoring and management. You will work with a team of fisheries biologists and lead seasonal employees conducting fisheries surveys, stream habitat assessments, data analysis, and report writing. We are looking for candidates that have strong data analysis and writing skills with extensive knowledge of ecological principles as they apply to aquatic ecosystems, fisheries biology and data management.

Working Conditions

Office is located in Seal Beach. Ability to conduct biological resource work in the field; travel throughout the state, and work irregular hours. Ability to use a personal computer and keyboard at least several hours a day, sitting most of the time, which may involve walking or standing for brief periods to access files, references, and other program materials. Attend meetings and internal and external training. In addition to working with regional staff, interact with headquarters staff and members of the public via e-mail, telephone and through virtual meetings. Possession of valid CA driver’s license. Ability to drive for up to 8 hours. Ability to work outdoors for up to week-long trips in variable weather conditions, operate 4WD vehicles, wade in streams, and walk over uneven outdoor terrain carrying a 40 lb. backpack for up to 8 hours. Backpacking and remote camping may be required on occasion. Occasional overnight travel to reach some project locations may be required.

Special Requirements

Physically fit and able to carry up to 40 pounds of gear while hiking in the back country for up to 8 hours a day. Must be a proficient swimmer and be able to tread water for at least 5 minutes.

  • Statement of Qualifications - Describe in detail your experience, educational background, and qualifications for this position. Give specific examples of your training and experience related to sampling fish in freshwater systems, stream habitat typing, boating experience, water quality and flow monitoring, experience working with stakeholders, governmental agencies, non-governmental agencies, and within multi-disciplinary groups.
