Job Description and Duties

This advertisement will run until filled with cutoff dates for review of applications on the 10th and 25th of each month.

This position is eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California.

The Board protects and improves the health and safety of working people in California by developing safety standards and regulation, providing consultation and recommendations on the more complex and highly sensitive proposed safety and health regulations, and evaluating and providing recommendations on petitions to revise regulations as well as requests for permanent variances from safety orders


The Senior Safety Engineer (SSE) is a working safety engineer responsible for the development of the State’s safety standards and may participate as technical advisor to the Board during public hearings. The SSE will develop programs to promote safety concepts and consult with labor, management and public groups on the more complex and sensitive safety engineering problems.

Working Conditions

Hybrid telework options are available and will be considered. This location offers easy freeway access, a variety of restaurants and shops nearby, and free parking! This is a Full-Time permanent position with the Board, located in a temperature controlled office environment with artificial lighting in a commercial office building. Incumbent will work at a desk, and is required to work extensively on computers as necessary for the drafting of letters, reports and other documents, and for research, email communication, file review, training and other purposes. Incumbent is expected to handle his/her own word processing. This is a full-time, Monday through Friday, position, however, Incumbent is expected to work all hours as necessary to accomplish his/her assignments, and although will generally average a 40-hour week, longer work hours may occasionally be required. Must be available to work outside normal business hours, including overnight travel, as needed.

Department Information

The mission of the Occupational Safety & Health Standards Board (Board) is to promote, adopt, and maintain reasonable and enforceable standards that will ensure a safe and healthful workplace for California workers.

Governed by a seven-member body appointed by the Governor, the Board ensures California’s workplace regulations are at least as effective as federal standards. The Standards Board also has the responsibility to grant or deny applications for variances from adopted standards and respond to petitions for new or revised standards. The independent board holds monthly meetings throughout California.

The Board is the only agency in the state authorized to adopt, amend or repeal occupational safety and health standards or orders. (L.C.142.3)


The Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) was established in 1927. DIR administers and enforces laws governing wages, workplace safety and health, apprenticeship training programs, and medical care and other benefits for injured workers.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Cal/OSHA Title 8 Regulations.
  • Certification as an Industrial Hygiene Professional (CIH) and as a Safety Professional (CSP).
  • Academic degree(s) conferred by an ABET accredited engineering program.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of safety engineering, operations, methods, equipment and devices primarily applicable to the State’s industrial engineering safety orders.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including experience giving briefings to executive management or public officials, preparing written reports, and explaining complex safety or health issues to laypersons.
  • Ability to develop and apply creative and innovative solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple time sensitive projects, while maintaining big-picture perspective.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and consultation skills.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat, and Power Point.
