The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) Worker Health and Safety (WHS) Branch is seeking a highly motivated individual to work as a Senior Industrial Hygienist with the ability to lead a skilled team of professionals, monitoring and mitigating pesticide exposures for both agricultural and non-agricultural use.

Under general direction of the Environmental Program Manager I, the Senior Industrial Hygienist will perform complex industrial hygiene work in connection with occupational health hazards associated with pesticide use by performing surveys and inspections of agricultural practices; designing, developing and reviewing pesticide study protocols; developing special sampling methodology, reviewing and approving sampling devices; conducting industrial hygiene research on pesticides and providing industrial hygiene consultations.

In addition, the senior industrial hygienist develops and provides industrial hygiene based training to departmental staff, County Agricultural Commissioner (CAC) staff and the regulated community and assists the DPR Human Resources Branch (HRB) in the development, implementation, and maintenance of departmental health and safety requirements.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional travel by automobile or air may be required to different areas of the State. Travel may include overnight stays.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, bending, sitting, and/or kneeling.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Working outside in varying temperatures and weather conditions and rough and uneven terrain.
  • Using a computer up to 8 hours per day.
  • May be required to occasionally work irregular hours.

NOTE: This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense.
