Job Description and Duties

The Research Data Specialist (RDS) I will design and analyze various research assignments and projects, including, but not limited to the annual reporting of statewide accountability and institutional effectiveness by California Community Colleges. The RDS I acts as junior analyst and primarily internally-facing resource needed to understand data related to system, college, and student performance and effectiveness. The RDS will Develop data and processes for modeling, mining, and production; and prepare data for use in predictive and prescriptive modeling, including associated documentation. Analyze and share results for progress monitoring and from data portals, accountability systems, MIS, and other tools to help determine multiple levels of performance and/or effectiveness. Develop analytical as well as policy recommendations for internal consideration.Support data projects and other research-related inquiries or requests, including engagement with requestors to clarify needs and IT/MIS staff, as needed. Monitor and prepare data requests for processing and analysis, including development of proposed solutions. Respond to and evaluate predefined and ad-hoc requests for data, statistical analysis, research projects, programmatic and legislative support. Participate in the design, writing, and production of reports related to system and campus progress monitoring, accountability and effectiveness. Communicate findings and recommendations in a manner that is accessible to multiple internal and external audiences.

Job Duties include a
 hybrid work setting within the state of CA.

Employee must reside in CA for a job appointment. 

This position has a hybrid work setting, including telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on the Chancellor’s Office’s evolving telework policy. The Chancellor’s Office supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to the headquarters office in Sacramento if an urgent need arises.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  1. Coursework in quantitative or qualitative methods for use in social science or educational research.
  2. Demonstrated skills in creating, combining, analyzing and presenting data using SQL, SAS, STATA, R and/or other programming languages and statistical packages.
  3. Experience conveying quantitative and qualitative research findings in oral, written, tabular, graphical, and other visual formats.
  4. Knowledge of research and planning issues relevant to postsecondary institutions.
  5. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with moderate direction.
  6. Attention to detail and experience with project management, including documentation of methodological decision-making and work-flow processes.
