Under the administrative direction of the Chief Deputy Attorney General, and the administrative and legal direction of the Public Rights Division Chief Assistant Attorney General (CAAG), the Senior Assistant Attorney General (SAAG) plans, organizes and directs the work of the statewide Native American and Tribal Affairs (NATA) Section. The NATA Section counsels and represents the Governor and the Attorney General on a variety of Native American and tribal issues, including negotiations for tribal-state class III gaming compacts, civil and criminal jurisdiction on tribal lands, cultural resource protection, civil litigation, government-to-government consultation, and other matters involving legal relationships between Native American organizations and the State. The NATA Section also represents and advises other state agencies and officials in all areas unique to tribes.
The SAAG develops policies and procedures regarding the NATA Section, represents state agencies before the courts, and advises the Attorney General, Governor, and other state agencies on sensitive Native American and Tribal Affairs issues.
The SAAG consults with the CAAG in the development and formulation of litigation, policy and program objectives, personnel management, and resource utilization; has principal responsibility for personnel management and resource utilization within the NATA Section and provides direction and guidance to subordinates through the supervising chain of command. The SAAG reviews annual budget requests, performs ongoing programmatic monitoring and reporting functions, and may directly assist subordinates in complex litigation.
Flexible schedules and telecommuting options may be available. While the position’s location is specified as statewide, the candidate selected for appointment can be headquartered in Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento, San Diego, Fresno, or San Francisco. Regardless of the headquarter location, the candidate will be expected to travel regularly to all of the Department’s main offices.
Please note: this position supervises attorneys and therefore it is critical that the selected candidate have active status in the California State Bar.
