Job Description and Duties

Are you looking for a fulfilling career that provides you with the opportunity to work on a variety of projects across the state?  We are looking for a Senior Engineer, Water Resources, to join our diverse, dynamic, and multi-disciplinary team in the Strategic Planning Branch.  In this position, you will serve as a technical expert in hydrologic and climate modeling.  This position focuses on developing, validating, and applying advanced modeling techniques, including artificial intelligence (AI), to assess climate change impacts on California's water resources.  This position plays a key part in planning, analyzing, and supporting the implementation of multi-benefit adaptation strategies and integrating innovative engineering solutions to enhance climate resilience in water infrastructure and management.  Additionally, this position leads efforts to incorporate greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategies into DWR’s water sector planning by developing guidance and best practices.  You will provide guidance and support to Department of Water Resources project managers in integrating climate adaptation into project planning and design, including the development and implementation of adaptation measures that shape Phase III of DWR’s CAP by prioritizing resiliency efforts such as infrastructure improvements, enhanced maintenance and operation procedures, revised health and safety protocols, and improved habitat management.  Review planning documents and reports by program participants for accuracy and applicability.

Special Requirements

Requires a valid license as a Professional Engineer in the field of Civil Engineering issued by the State of California.  Must possess a valid California Driver's License.

Desirable Qualifications

We are looking for applicants who have engineering, water resources, modeling and climate change knowledge; we seek a candidate who can easily adapt to changing work priorities and multitask on a variety of complex engineering investigations, and one who exhibits leadership and teamwork skills.

 

The applicant should be proactive and possess good working knowledge of planning and implementing practices related to climate change adaptation for California’s water resources with an ability to lead staff tasks and priorities and advise the Department on policies and procedures. 

 

The position requires knowledge and demonstrated understanding of hydrologic engineering systems and analysis, manipulation of large data sets, and complex problem-solving abilities.  An understanding of climate modelling approaches, outputs, and applications is very beneficial.  Specific skills that are desirable:

 

Working knowledge of hydrologic engineering analysis; broad knowledge of various hydrologic modelling approaches; flood control systems; water supply collection, transport, and distribution systems; water storage infrastructure planning, management, and operations; water supply planning and management; uncertainty and reliability principles as they affect engineered systems designed, built, or operated to protect the environment and the public health, welfare, and safety.

 

Working knowledge of climate change analysis procedures for water resources and communication and engagement related to climate change analysis and use of climate science.  Experience with developing and implementing policy and procedures.

 

Experience with contract and/or grant management, budgeting, and tracking.

 

Experience participating or collaborating on project teams, with the ability to take a leadership role in multi-disciplinary projects and to lead engineering staff.

 

Operate a computer proficiently using software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to effectively draft reports and correspondence.  Deliver management briefings and public presentations.  Strong written and verbal communication skills.  Ability to work in a team/matrix environment.  Able to conduct outreach to stakeholders, working with external agencies, presentation skills, and communication between Interagency and other partners.
