The California Department of Social Services, Legal Division, is recruiting to fill one permanent full-time Legal Support Supervisor I in our Sacramento office. We have flexible schedules in a hybrid (remote / telework and in-office) work environment.

SELECTED CANDIDATE MAY BE ENTITLED TO A RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION PAY DIFFERENTIAL FOR THIS DESIGNATED LOCATION.

Under the general direction of a Legal Support Supervisor II, the LSS I will supervise the work of legal secretarial staff who provide legal support services to a professional staff of attorneys.The LSS I plans, organizes, and coordinates the flow of workload assignments; projects distribution of caseload assignments and reassigns staff to meet changing workload needs; participates in routine meetings with subordinate staff,as well as with administrative management and supervising attorneys; assists management in interviewing, hiring, mentoring, and training of new staff; prepares probationary and annual performance reports for subordinate staff; and holds the lead role regarding a variety of office management and administrative functions.The LSS I may perform more responsible legal secretarial work in addition to supervision of the legal secretarial support team.

LEGAL SUPPORT SUPERVIOR I – MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EITHER I:
One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Senior Stenographer, Legal, Range B or Senior Typist, Legal, Range B.

OR II
Three years of experience in legal stenographic and/or clerical work, at least one year of which shall have been in a responsible position performing a variety of difficult stenographic and/or clerical work or in a supervisory capacity.

(Experience in California state service applied toward the specialized one-year requirement must be performing the duties of a class at a responsibility level not less than that of Senior Stenographer, Legal, Range B.)

(Academic education above the twelfth grade may be substituted for the year of required general experience on the basis of either: (a) one year of general education being equivalent to three months of experience; or (b) one year of education of a business or commercial nature being equivalent to six months of experience.)

Working Conditions

SELECTED CANDIDATE MAY BE ENTITLED TO A RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION PAY DIFFERENTIAL FOR THIS DESIGNATED LOCATION.

This work location is very convenient! The CDSS is located two blocks from the light rail and public transportation: within walking distance to the State Capitol, parks, restaurants, farmer’s markets and the Golden 1 Arena. Our building has easy access to I-5, Highway 50, and Highway 80. 

This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under California Government Code Section 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California. All telework schedules are subject to change and may be reevaluated at any time. Specific telework arrangements may be discussed in more detail with the respective hiring manager. Telework does not change the terms and conditions of employment, the essential functions of job duties, or required compliance with the Department of Social Services policies.

  • General knowledge of the work of the Legal Division and the CDSS.
  • Knowledge of policy-making and administrative processes; ability to establish, implement and maintain office policies and procedures.
  • Experience with identifying problems, developing strategies to address problems, and implementing strategies consistently in various locations.
  • Experience with effectively communicating orally and in writing, in a well-organized, accurate, clear and concise manner.
  • Experience distributing and monitoring legal case assignments to completion, while meeting designated due dates and time frames.
  • Ability to maintain poise, good humor and flexibility while working in a time-sensitive, deadline-driven, results-oriented environment.
  • Experience in a supervisory or lead capacity within a legal office, and the ability to effectively manage multiple time sensitive priorities.
  • Knowledge of technical legal terms and the processing, creating and editing of various legal forms, such as pleadings and subpoenas.
