Job Description and Duties

Under direction of the Chief, Division of Design, the incumbent is responsible for management of the Department's Landscape Architecture programs. The incumbent manages by defining landscape architectural program policies, standards, and guidelines to ensure a consistent statewide approach in the programming and project development process of highway planting, irrigation and planting restoration, safety roadside rest areas, roadside management roadside enhancements, and designates "Landscape Freeways" as directed by the California Administrative Code in collection with Control of Outdoor Advertising. The incumbent also advises executive management on high-level policy issues related to sustainability, livability, planting, resource conservation, rest areas and traveler services, environmental mitigation, transportation enhancement, pedestrian needs, human needs between transportation modes and at multi-modal facilities, context sensitive solutions, transportation art, landscaped freeways and on transportation aesthetics.

Working Conditions

Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to report to the headquartered location a minium of two days a week. Business travel may be required and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

This is a Caltrans Open examination.

 

All applicants must meet the minimum qualifications by the final filing date to participate in the examination.

 

Minimum Qualifications:



Possession of the above Certificate of Registration. and Either I Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Supervising Landscape Architect or Supervising Landscape Architect, Caltrans. or

Three years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Senior Landscape Architect or Senior Landscape Architect, Caltrans.

Or II

Experience: Broad and extensive experience (more than five years) in landscape architectural practice, at least three years of which shall be equivalent to the duties of a Senior Landscape Architect, Caltrans, in the California state service directing and coordinating the planning and design of major landscape architectural projects and programs. and

Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in landscape architecture. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

This examination will utilize an evaluation of each candidate’s experience and education (E&E) compared to a standard developed from the Class Specification. For this reason, it is especially important that each candidate take special care in accurately and completely filling out his or her State application (STD. 678). List all experience relevant to the “Minimum Qualifications”.

This examination will not establish a civil service list; therefore, candidates will not have the ability to transfer their eligibility to other departments. Candidates will be notified of their examination results.

Note: If using Out of Class (OOC) experience, you must submit a copy of your signed and approved OOC documentation. Failure to do so may result in your OOC experience not being considered during the evaluation process of this examination.

Education: If using your college education to meet the minimum qualifications, college transcripts must be submitted with your application and SOQ. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted for entrance into the examination; however, official transcripts may be required prior to appointment.
