Job Description and Duties

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW) Wildlife Diversity Program (WDP) is seeking a qualified applicant to evaluate and report on the status of terrestrial wildlife species that are listed under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA). The position works with CDFW and external species experts, state and federal agencies, tribal representatives, and the public to assess the status of wildlife species and the factors that threaten them. The position will work closely with an amazing team of skilled and friendly colleagues in the WDP, located in West Sacramento, California. This position requires an education and experience in wildlife biology and the ability to produce detailed reports supported by scientific literature explaining complicated information in a format that is easily understood by fellow scientists and the public. We are looking for someone who is passionate about California's diverse native wildlife and is willing to work hard to ensure it is conserved!

Under the direction of the CESA Unit Supervisor, the incumbent will prioritize, initiate, and write five-year review reports for threatened and endangered species. The incumbent may also assist with status reviews prepared in response to petitions to list species, and in the development of recovery plans. The incumbent is also responsible for providing direction, guidance, and technical expertise to staff across the Department and will participate as a Department representative on interagency teams, technical working groups, and policy teams.

Working Conditions

Duties are performed primarily in an office environment and at various meetings and venues. Ability to develop and deliver effective oral presentations before the public. Ability to use a personal computer and keyboard at least several hours a day, sitting most of the time, which may involve walking or standing for brief periods to access files, references, and other program materials. In addition to working with West Sacramento based staff, interact with CDFW Regional staff and members of the public via e-mail, internet conferencing, telephone, and onsite to complete work assignments. Statewide travel up to 5% of time may be required. Possession of CA driver’s license. Ability to drive for up to 8 hours in a day. Ability to conduct biological resource work in the field and work at odd hours. Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and walk over uneven outdoor terrain carrying a 30 lb. backpack for up to 6 hours. The position may require a uniform identifying the employee as Department staff.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Knowledge of wildlife ecology and/or conservation biology principles. Experience working with native terrestrial wildlife, their habitats, and knowledge of California's ecosystems. Experience working with amphibian, reptile, bird, and/or mammal species. Knowledge of global threats to wildlife populations such as climate change, invasive species, habitat degradation, diseases, and loss of adaptive genetic diversity. Understanding of state and federal wildlife conservation laws and regulations. Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams to achieve a common goal. Good analytical, interpersonal, public presentation, communication, and technical and non-technical writing skills. Routine use of computer programs including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and on-line sourcing of information.
