Job Description and Duties

The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is recruiting to fill a Supervising Special Investigator I (SSI I) position within the Office of Protective Services (OPS), at Canyon Spring Community Facility located in Cathedral City, CA.

Under the general direction of the Supervising Special Investigator II (Captain), Office of Protective Services (OPS). The SSI I is a sworn Peace Officer pursuant to section 830.0(v) of the California Penal Code. The Supervising Special Investigator I supervise Sergeants and Investigators and respond to the investigative incident(s) 24/7 at the Developmental Centers and Community Facility (DC/CF). The facility provides services 24 hours per day, 7 days per week (24/7), and is responsible for ensuring consumer protection, staff safety, and public safety at all times.

Effective July 1, 2025, State employees are subject to a salary reduction of two percent in exchange for three point five hours of the Personal Leave.

Working Conditions

Works on a computer approximately forty (40) percent of the time reviewing/writing policies, investigations, and electronic communication.  Performs other physical work associated with the performance of investigations, e.g., gathering documents/evidence, conducting/recording interviews, and traveling to other Department locations.  Maintains the ability and willingness to travel overnight and work holidays, weekends, and/or odd/irregular hours to respond/oversee investigative incident(s) 24/7.

Department Information

Department of Developmental Services is a California state agency providing services and support to over 450,000 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), including cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, autism, epilepsy, and related conditions.

Canyon Springs is located in Cathedral City, Riverside County, 110 miles southeast of Los Angeles in the Coachella Valley. Recreation/cultural attractions include golf, tennis, desert preserves, parks, rock climbing, hiking, biking, museums, art galleries, and theater. Next door is well-known city of Palm Springs. Although known as a winter resort area, increasing numbers are making the Coachella Valley their year-round home. There are schools and shopping nearby.

Special Requirements

The Office of Protective Services (OPS) is a Law Enforcement Agency.  After the background check clears, the applicant will be appointed to the position. This background check includes interviews of employment and personal references; and FBI, California DOJ fingerprint clearances and DMV clearance(s). The selected applicant must complete a notarized waiver for access to their personal records.

 

Completion of the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Basic Academy or Specialized Investigators Basic Course is required and current California driver’s licenses are required. This is a sworn Peace Officer position pursuant to California Penal Code section 830.3(v). The successful candidate will undergo a complete background investigation, in accordance with the Commission on POST requirements. All appointments are subject to pre-employment physical and fingerprint clearance.
