Job Description and Duties

Are you passionate about joining an editorial team to produce impactful technical publications that shape California’s water future?  The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) is seeking an Associate Editor of Publications to work in the Technical Publications section, which specializes in editing, writing, graphic design, and communications.  The team produces high-quality reports, manuals, training materials, and other publications that align with departmental policies and goals.

 

In this position, you would help DWR staff, including project managers, technical authors, and interdisciplinary teams, to deliver clear, concise, accessible, and informative reports related to a variety of California’s water issues, projects, and programs.  If you enjoy crafting the written word and thrive in a collaborative, dynamic environment, this is the job for you.

Department of Water Resources (DWR) was established in 1956 by the California State Legislature.  We manage California’s water resources, systems, and infrastructure, including the State Water Project, in a responsible sustainable way.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Our ideal candidate will have experience in formatting, styling, and editing reports; extensive knowledge of grammar and punctuation; and strong organizational and project management skills.  Must have excellent verbal and written communication abilities to take complex concepts and explain them in a way that meets the State requirement of using “plain language” in reports and documents.  Be familiar with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and publication standards.  Work well both independently and as a team player to collaborate on projects.  Demonstrate flexibility and ability to work on multiple projects concurrently while meeting deadlines.  Significant experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.  Familiarity with Adobe productivity programs such as InDesign and Photoshop is a plus.
