Job Description and Duties

In the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM), under the direction of the Deputy Director, (CEA B) for Community Wildfire Preparedness and Mitigation, the Assistant Deputy Director (CEA A) will provide statewide administrative oversight over the Wildfire Planning and Statistics Program, and the Wildfire Risk Reduction Program. The incumbent oversees the Department's implementation of various fire prevention related programs including Defensible Space, Home Hardening, Utility Wildfire Mitigation, CAL FIRE and Fire Service Incident Reporting, Wildfire Protection Building Construction Codes, Hazard Mapping, Risk Modeling, State Responsibility Area Remapping, and Fuel Reduction Reporting. The Assistant Deputy Director will also regularly respond to emergencies and wildfires of all types and sizes. 

This position may qualify for a recruitment and retention bonus of $1550 per month.

Working Conditions

The headquarters location will be determined based on the location of the successful candidate and may be at any Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) location throughout the state.

Note: Incumbents are permitted to telework one day per week.

In your Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) document, please address how you possess each DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION (numbered below) using specific examples from your experience, education, and training. 
Please ensure all examples provided were obtained at a supervisory/managerial level.

1.) Provide at least two examples of your experience with the State legislative process, including your participation in the analysis of proposed laws that may affect the Department’s Community Wildfire Preparedness and Mitigation Division.

2.) Provide at least two examples of your experience with the State budget process, including your understanding of the rules and procedures governing special fund and general fund programs.

3.) Provide at least two examples of your ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with CAL FIRE staff, local and statewide partners, and other governmental agencies (e.g., county, state, or federal).

4.) Provide at least two examples of your work or contributions in wildfire prevention, preparedness, and mitigation.

5.) Provide at least two examples that illustrate your involvement or leadership experience in promulgating regulatory packages through the various rule making processes. 

6.) Provide at least two examples that demonstrate your interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills as they relate to developing cooperative working relationships with high-level officials and entities (e.g., the Governor’s Office, California Natural Resources Agency, Legislature, Executive Officers, local, State and Federal government, or other public and private organizations).
